well thanks for the come back. the problems are all posted on here but it is nice to read positive stuff too.
I guess I will be trying threading on the lathe.

I have been reading posts on lathe threading. my question is has any body been able to "trouble free" cut threads consistently on the mach lathe setup?
I haven't been able to find a positive answer to that.
thankyou

so thats how you figure that --it makes sense because that is close to what its coming up with. now that i am comfortable with the answer I can fine tune it. i wonder how that is going to affect the over all speed of all axis.  thankyou much.

the motor alone hast be 200 steps per 360 rev.

yes I agree. but we are down to (4 steps for a 360 reveloution)  that is what it is lowered to. it cannot be accurate.

General Mach Discussion / 4th axis setup with a gecko drive
« on: February 12, 2012, 04:44:01 PM »
any body know what the correct (steps per) are in mach3 setting 4th axis with a gecko drive. I have tried to set it up with different drives but it always ends up with 1 to 4 steps in a 360 deg turn of the stepper.  i don't know everything about cnc setup but I am not a newby either. I have a bridgeport retrofit all axis using geckos 203.
on the linear axis are all runing 20000 step per unit with "no" problems. Decided to set up the 4th axis with a gecko and cannot get more than 4 steps in motor tuning to a 360 rev   gecko.  now I  know better than that.  the stepper alone will get you 200 steps.  this is a 1 to 1 direct connect and it still don't even begin to consider gecko microstep. Either I am really missing something or mach3 has a real problem. if you have any answers thankyou ahead of time.

set the spindle stepper up as a rotary indexer as A axis. if its 20 threads per inch then program z axis to move 1 inch while the the index axis is turning 20 revolutions along with a feed rate you can live with..
