General Mach Discussion / Re: My X-Axis is losing steps!

For an update on the whole problem, please see "losing steps or something..." in the FAQ section of this forum.   I finally traced the problem to faulty signals coming out of the parallel port and while I don't know why they were so wrong, I purchased a Smoothstepper from Warp9TD, and have had NO problems since.  Don

The pulsed direction signals must have been from the conflicting ports&pins assignments but the problem remained after correcting that.  Apparently, the problem is in the computer itself.  I glad the smoothstepper is working, although my MPG unit is a little strange in its behavior.  Another thread maybe.  Thanks for the help.

I have a new Smooth stepper that I received last week and the "offending" components have been omitted from the new ones.

It didn't solve all of the problem, but it did get the pulsed direction signals fixed.  I suspect my choice of computers yeilds noisy jittery parallel port signals.  Anyway, your suggestion fixed the warnings and the smoothstepper is running the machine perfectly at this point.

I got a chance to look at the outputs of the parallel port after untangling the redundant ports and pins situation that the Smoothstepper was warning me about.  The Direction signal is now a steady state.  However, the step signals are not very clear.  Nothing like the sharply defined square waves of the smoothstepper.  I'll post pictures but unfortunately they were soft on focus...  The do show the almost continuous step line with the pulses under it.  Doesn't look good at all.  Don

Ahh.  I've had this thing hooked up  redundantly for ever...  I'll fix it and try that out tomorrow.  Wonder if it could be related to my other problem in "Losing Steps or Somthing..."  in the FAQ section?  Hmmm.  Thanks for the help. Don

I'm a little confused.  Are you saying that I don't need to use the output signals? Or the Motor outputs?  The motor outputs select the step and direction pins I'm using.  I've never quite understood what the "Output Signals" did.  Do I need them? Or can I disable the 8 that I'm not using.  Pin 1 is used for the coolant pump relay, but I don't use it yet for fear of causing a flood on the floor...  Thanks, Don

Is it OK to clean out the XML Backups folder?  There seems to be a lot of files in there.

I'm having trouble identifying the XML file in the Mach3 folder.  Please help.  The XML Backups are xb__ file extensions and can't be uploaded.  ??? Don
