Set speed to 4000 rpm but machine goes up to 5000 rpm and then backs off to 4000 rpm and is ok then till you change speed again and the same happens

Hi Hood

Only thing I can seein the book about the motor.
Motor with rotary frequency converter infinitely variable with continuous rpm surveillance and clockwise/anticlockwise rotation
230V 50 Hz    8.6A    2 kW    0-5000 U/min.
Was on to Pro Machine tools but not much info only that the motor tuning and set up on Mach is what is used.
As I said confused with the step entry and velocity. I really need to know what the step should be to get started as step and velocity entries make a huge difference.
I can get it set to run at say 1000 rpm but when you go to 500 rpm depending on the entry it is up or down.

I set the pot in manual only
When I switch over to cnc I need Mach to control spindle speed
There is a sensor on the head
Have set the spindle pulley as per manufacturer to 4

Motor is a 2kW varicon
Manual control by potentiometer, cnc control by Mach3
Been fiddling with the steps but dont quite understand what they do
When I started to set the spindle speed the step was at 20 giving the results in my first post
Changed step to 10000 outcome at1000 rpm on control 1414 rpm on tacho at 2000rpm   2400 rpm on tacho
Changed to 8000 outcome at 1000 rpm  1080 rpm  at 2000 rpm  1850 rpm
Dont now exactly what I am doing obviously
