General Mach Discussion / Re: Unequal Depth of Cut

Good idea Dave,

I have a Taig spindel and the table top is about 27"x 41". What will be the best endmill to do this job?

Sorry but my straight edge proved to be NOT so straight. Checking the table top with a new straight edge proved that the top is out the wack in numerous places.

So I removed the Aluminum top and installed a 5/8” thick MDF and now all is fine

Actually I started to do my 1st cut on a piece of MDF and noticed that the depth was not equal. Then I mount my indicator on the spindle and noticed the same.

I do have a straight edge and the table top is flat so the problem must be somewhere on the parts of the X axis. I doubt that there is screw deflection.

I will take measurements as you say RICH and hopefully I will find the error

There is a difference of 0.070” on the depth of cut from one end of the X travel to the other and I can’t figure out where the problem is

On the attached pic, points A,B, C are equal to the table top on both ends and the D (Z axis plate) is square to the table.

What I should check next?

Thanks Hood, 5080 was the right number

My ballscrews have 10mm Lead or Pitch and the G540 driver has 10 microstep drivers

When I follow Mach3 manual par 5.5.1.2 & 5.5.1.4 the above should give me 4000 which I put into the box “Steps per” in the motor tuning screen.

But 5.5.1.1 says for a 2mm pitch screw: (screw revs per unit) = 1 divide by 2 = 0.5 revs/mm and in my case with 10mm pitch I get 0.1. Where do I put this number?

I started the testing of my cnc and I want to use fist the MDI window for safety reasons

So I zero the DRO and I type G00 Y12.0 (for 12”) but the axis keeps going past the 12” by a lot

I type G00 Y1.0 (for 1 foot) and the axis stops at about 5”

My units are set for inches, so how I should type inches? Perhaps in decimals?

Thank you Robert

I have searched many places on this subject and you are right, there is not a simple answer. I have a small pump controlled with a momentary switch and a manual valve at the outlet and was planing to squirt a few drops of vegetable oil once in a while. As I said I don’t plan to hog material out in one pass so I think a few drops of cooking oil will be fine.

I know about Tap Magic and other commercial liquids but I think they are too expensive for my needs. I thought someone on this forum may have come up with a simple solution for simple cuts

I will be cutting Aluminum for hobby use and probably I will never go more than 1/16” per pass with a feed rate of 10-15”/min. Should I use a cooling fluid for the end mill and if yes what kind?

I have seen others use from cooking oil to more expensive specialty cooling fluids for Aluminum and I wonder which one to use
