Hai All,
I am setting up a router with a servo drive.
The problem i am facing is that the gearbox of the servo motor is having a backlash of 2degrees on the gear end.
I want to use the gear box and do not plan to use a timing belt.
So I plan to install the encoder to the shaft of the gear box and not the motor spindle.
Will this cause any unnecessary hunting of the system.
I plan to use a higher count encoder so that accuracy is not compromised
Regards,
Antony.

You have to put the encoder on the motor. There is no way around it...

You have already introduced a serios comprimise, by using that gearbox.
One thing I have learnt about CNC is that you can have 90% good parts, but that 10% in bad parts, makes a 100% bad machine.
