Title: Got My mill running :)
Post by: Brian Barker on April 17, 2006, 11:34:55 PM
So I have the Grex running on a Mill :)

It is running well with the 1 KW servo motors that are on it with 2500PPR encoders and I am feeding pulses at 250,000 pps :) this is MUCH faster than Mach3... The drawing was done at 300IPM and the mill is about 3500 Lb with a 3Hp motor. Very nice for this little mill...

Thats sweet movement. I am amazed at how smooth it is.
Thanks for posting the video Brian.

That is totally amazing.....

Well impressive !

I did a few more tests at 200IPM on some very small parts :) I can tell you that the newer version of Mach4 is going to do MUCH better! I am sitting down to draw out a test Gcode file for the Grex now and after that I will have a base for all the testing that I am going to be doing  8) As soon as i am done with the Gcode file I will post it here so you can test your Mach3 mills on it ...

Out of all the talk so far about Mach4 and Grex, this has caught my interest the most.
If a picture is worth a 1000 words, then how many words is a video at 30 fps for 2 minutes? :)

Brian,
How much torque do those servos put out? and at what speed?
Are the drives step and direction?

Fernando

They are max RPM of 3000 at about 5N-m (44.5 In-Lb) with a MAX 16N-m (133 In-Lb)

Brian..  Are these the Automation direct servo's?

Yes they are  :o

Yes I vaguely recalled you said you had some to try...   I'm very interested in them myself as Servo systems seem to be very expnsive in comparison here in the UK. (We do tend to pay £1 per $ on some imported stuff)

Did you have rto buy all the items listed? ie leads, breakout, etc etc.

Wayne...

I made my own cables... the breakout is to big and nasty to put in my mill :)

You should post some pics of the installation Brian ;-)    I wonder if Automationdirect will supply outside of the us.

I am still setting the mill up :( I have the PLC in the machine and about 50% wired up... As soon as I get it up and running I will post a few pic's of it

I am thinking of using a Grex and the automation direct drives on a hardinge lathe I am converting. Are the servos on your mill direct drive or do you use a gear reduction?

they are direct drive on the X and Y axis but Ihave a belt on the Z axis... I now have the mill running at 450 IPM and it seems to be working well... I think it is time to finish wire it and get making chips.... the pen is fun but chips are so much cooler ;)

I run only blue chips ....

Blue chips from cutting Aluminium, that would be a novel sight  ;)

I have tested that and I can't seem to get it... I did run a lefthanded bit into some AL at 12000 Rpm... Art was there forthat one and still no blue. I will keep working on this problem ;)

I have tried for years, lots of clogged up cutters but still no blue chips. Oh well never mind.  ;D

Yes, I watched brian ram a 1/4 inch drill bit into aluminum running backwards. (Left hand threaded drill bit in the wrong drawer..not Brians fault. :)  ) Damn thing went in about an inch, and then corkscrewed the bit.
Never thought Id ever see the process of how they make corkscrews from drill bits..

(Hey Brian..what a great product thought, every machiniist woudl want a corkscrew make from a drill bit. :)  )

Brian, how smooth are the servos at really slow speeds? Do they exhibit any cogging? The fast stuff is really cool but most of the time my lathe will be running pretty slow during cutting.
Title: Re: Got My mill running :)
Post by: Brian Barker on April 26, 2006, 08:01:55 PM
It is VERY smooth at low speed. There is NO cogging and I have been VERY happy with them.

blue chips hirt when they go down your shirt!!!

Those servos, are those the $600/servo motors at automationdirect? awefully expencive!

But you get what you pay for... The drives will do homing and backlash comp in the drive! They are FAST and can turn the PID loop real time... Nice drives

Brian, what acceleration do you have set on that mill with those servos?
Do you think they could provide position at 1000 IPM (thousand) of a 150lb head?
With lower resolution of course, I am looking for a solution that could help position a nailing gun at 1000ipm, I can only wish that I could move it at 2000ipm with a decent acceleration.

I am running 60In/sec^2 and it could move a load at 1000IPM no problem

Digikey I think...

There is a new video showing a file getting cut a t 300 IPM with a 1/16inch mill  in brass... The mill willl now do 500IPM  ;D That is about all I think I can get out of the mill at this point, But I have a 10inch 4th axis that is next on the list!

View it here. May take a few moments to start to stream.

Is your machine capable of going the 500ipm the servos can deliver? being, will it wear way too fast?

Brian That is awesome!!

When the big project is done we ae going to put AD 1k on our BP clone, i can't wait!

how is the g rex treating you? I am just kind of waiting until it is a little more mature but it seems to be running pretty well!

Kudos to ART and MARISS

The screws should take the velocity no problem and the ways are not cast on cast... they have tercite (Sorry for the spelling) and it needs WAY OIL :)

Chad there are a few more bugs but for the most part it is running VERY well... There is going to be an update in the firmware that should fix most of the bugs. So I think in the next few months you should see this grow into a great product!

Hi Brian,
I found some good deals on chinese ac servos, they are very similar to the ones automation direct offers, but their software is in chinese, is there need for the software to get the automation direct servos running with mach 3? or is it just a monitoring software?

Fernando

You are going to need the software to get the servo's up and running... But you could (I think) turn them with the keypad on the drives.

Brian,
what mill is this. are there pictures posted somewhere. besides the video of it running.  I am looking for info to to retrofit 2 large knee mills a bridgeport with 30 taper and a Lagun with 40 taper. both cnc. the bridgeport is a R2E4 servo machine and a Lagun I think it is a FT3V  photo's are posted on my web site.
Thanks

There are no pics :( IT is an eagel CNC mill that I got for a good price as a test bead. I wanted to have a mill that I could just run and run fast so I went with the servo drives, motors and cables from Automation direct. It is not a cheap way to go but the speed and simplistic set up are great! If you would like to do somthing like that you are looking at about 1500.00 an axis :(

Looked at your page and like the JD you got! I would get one like that if I could find one with the 3PT hitch...

If I could just wave my magic wand and get it to all come together. The lagun will have to have all the electricals replaced as well as all of the ballscrews. X and Y for sure. "we rolled it over and bent the X screw and the Y was having some sort of trouble before it came to me. Rockford ball screws say they can sell me a pair for about 900.00. not sure I want to put 2000.00 in that mill right now.  the Bridgeport is much closer to running. I hope to get the bridgeport running without much else but a Grex. but from some of the post's there seems to be a conversion card required to interface the Grex (stepp direction) to some sort of analog output. If that is so would I be better off just putting in the Biggest rutex drives being fed by the Grex. and using the Bridgeport servomotors and encoders.

Thanks Brian,
Boy good thing I was setting down. I guess if you want to play with the big boys you have to pay.  2000 for drives, 3000 for control card 1000 for operator Interface(Elo Touch screen plus mount and MPG switches ect. )  500 for pc to run everything plus vfd and I am thinking some sort of IO expansion. I guess 7,000 In round figures. not much if you say It real fast :-)

I am concentrating on the operator interface.  as I plan to use it on various machines. I will probably try to use the Bridgeport servo's and the Grex to start with. this will be my first atual cnc machine so if it mooves under it's own power it will be magical :-) also a bunch of waht I want to machine will need the 4th axis so there is that to mess with. probably Gecko and stepper motor.
would really like to see pictures of your machine  ( a picture is worth a thousand words)
Hey what about the Cincinnati machine with the Toolchanger where is that at now.  one of my friends has one and it seems like a real machine to retrofit.
ok off to bed
thanks again
