Title: CNC turret punch - Mach3 parallel port is the best
Post by: zafarsalam on April 22, 2019, 02:33:56 PM
Finished a CNC turret punch retrofit last week. It's a Finn Power TP 2000. Manufactured in 1993. It is now running on Mach3 with two parallel ports and an Arduino Mega on modbus and brains. It is consuming 48 inputs and 36 outputs including servo motor outputs.

Customer bought it used and when it reached here two months ago then they realized that machine had been lying around in open and had rain water all over it. It took a month to clean up the machine and paint it then customer invited us to try out it's controller. Water marks were inside the electrical cabinet too and predictably it did't show any display when powered up.

It was decided then and there to retrofit it to new control and motors/drives. Machine was equipped with 4 Siemens servo motors which we replaced with Chinese motors. Siemens System 3M controller was also disassembled and in went our Mach3 system. Hydraulic servo punch controller was interfaced with Arduino and parallel port. Arduino is also handling inputs and outputs for tool changer and other bells and whistles. Designed our own break out board to interface machine I/O with Arduino and the PP. Here is a video of the machine running at 350 hits per minute. It is capable of 600 ppm in nibbling mode and 900 ppm in marking mode. That's the capability of parallel ports in Mach3. Mach is a winner. Took almost a week for the wiring, one for motors mounting and another couple of weeks for screen design, macros programming and other logic design. See the video on Youtube https://youtu.be/GlgS88Fz0wc (https://youtu.be/GlgS88Fz0wc). It's been a very satisfying project thus far.
