Title: New Forum!
Post by: bryannab on November 05, 2018, 09:43:48 AM
Good morning,

As we continue moving forward with a shiny new website (check it out!), we are also going to be making changes here at the support forum. I would love some suggestions on what you would like to see included in the new forum. I cannot guarantee any specific changes, but I will make sure each suggestion is considered carefully. This community is important to me and to Newfangled Solutions and it is my goal to preserve it and give it more room to grow. Thank you for the time you spend here each day and for your input.

Happy CNCing,
Bryanna

Finding the support forum from the main web site is not intuitive.

You can find it from the site map at the bottom, but if you use
the Support Tab at the top, you do not get a link to the forum.

I would have expected to see the forum links under the "Self
Directed" help section.

Also, the continued mention of there being a "new" Version 2
of Mach4 confuses people into thinking there has been a recent
change whereas this happened a couple of years ago.

Steve,

Thank you for those suggestions. I'll pass them along to our web design team. Please let me know if you have any other suggestions about the new forum.

Getting rid of the restriction that EVERY attachment on the entire forum has to have a unique filename.

I'm with steve.  The forum is the main thing I go to when going to the website.  It was easy to get to from the old website.
I like the new look though!!

I'm +1 on both of those!

Big MACHSUPPORT FORUMS button on the main page.

Get rid of the file name restriction!

Also, is this the forum with the short timeout restriction? I'll type, have to run to the shop to look at something or otherwise spend time not typing, come back, type more, try to post, get timeout, all my typing is gone. If so, that could be extended, too!! I could be thinking of a different forum ;)

Have a look at the usage of quite a few threads some have not been used for ages , maybe time to get the broom out and clean things up

As others have said a button to take us here

Very political the general layout now looks very dated in comparison to the main pages those big labels hot topic etc . Are very 60’s

Regarding the new forum layout -

One thing I have wanted to see for a long time, and now could contribute to is a HOW TO section. Documentation (or lack thereof in some instances) has always been big issue for me.
It would also help the newbie, a group who we all belong to at one point, to get up to speed on certain things.

MY 0.5 cents worth! :)

1.How about a link in the first post that takes us directly to the new forum, as opposed to guessing as to where it is. If it is Machsupport.com, it is currently down and I am not sure if it is where the new forum is or not.
2. I went to http://support.machsupport.com/ to check it out, (saw it in your sig)and the colors are even more washed out than this website. What ever happened to color contrast?
3. Please put a link from the Forum (These pages)to the Mach home page. Even clicking the Artsoft Logo at the top of the page brings you to the forum, not the Mach home page.

Time to climb down and get some coffee.
Thanks for all you do Bryanna.

Why does my browser say this site is not secure?? Big red triangle warning!

Title: Re: New Forum!

Because it does not employ HTTPS for connection. The web site was recently
updated and the main site is now HTTPS, but the forum is not yet HTTPS
because the forum software must be updated, and that is not as simple as
it sounds. As long as your password is not the same as you use on more
sensitive sites, it is not a big deal. The old version of the web site was not
HTTPS at all.

Thanks for your reply to my previous post. I had no idea it would if it went tyo anyone or if the post was in the right place.

I still don't know where to go to  post on or find the current forum pages. Currently recovering from a computer crash on Friday after trying to  click through all  of the pages tryring to find Stuarts last post to me and related posts as well!! Everything locked and couldn't do anything. Had to reload windows, Not very happy.

Is there a new home page / website / forum etc, that is current and accessable for those of us as quoted newbies trying to get started. Needs to be simplified in my opinion, Home page, list of pages to get to and then searchj by topic. JUst an idea from a NEWBIE.

Very pleased with Mach 4!!
Forum should be as easy to use.

Thanks,

Ken

OK, this is what i mean. I have a notification in my mail box about a reply to my recent post with a link to read it. Click on the link and all there is is my post with no reply and no indication that i have a reply. Shouldn't the link as stated on it take me to the reply someone posted to me.

I cannot find the reply to my post.

Hi Ken,

This can happen when a spam posting has been made in your thread and then subsequently deleted (usually by a moderator).

You really need to activate URL rewriting on www.machsupport.com so that all old links to forum posts are redirected to the right forum post at forum.macsupport.com.
Shouldn't be hard since all that is needed is to replace www.machsupport.com/forum/* with forum.machsupport.com/forum/*
Now all internal links, external links plus Google and other search links to forum posts are dead.

You also need to fix the forum search function. It now fails with an error:
2: pspell_new(): PSPELL couldn't open the dictionary. reason: No word lists can be found for the language "en".
File: /var/www/vhosts/machsupport.com/forum.machsupport.com/forum/Sources/Search.php

My main issue at present is the fact that the Search function is disabled due to the search not finding the Dictionary. This means that no serach of the entire ArtSoft database can be done. Please fix this!

Bryanna had made a large list of all the #VARS in Mach4.  I can't find that list anywhere, especially since the search function is currently down.
That is something that could be added to the DOCS folder in Mach4, and/or added to the Mach4 Tool Box.

thosj,
I have those; but I was thinking Bryanna had a txt document that had a pretty comprehensive list on here somewhere.
I remember seeing it before the searching crapped out.

It's not very practical but until they have fixed URL rewriting to redirect old forum URLs to the right post in the new forum and fixed the search engine in the forum it is possible to use Google or Bing or similar to find old posts in the forum.
In Google, do a search for Mach4 VARS site:www.machsupport.com/forum
Use cached copy of the page to verify if it's the content you're looking for. When you have found the right post and want to open it in the new forum you copy the link to the search hit in the google result list:

This for example is the first hit from Google:
https://www.machsupport.com/forum/index.php?topic=27396.0

Replace https with http and www with forum and you have the address to the post in the new forum:
http://forum.machsupport.com/forum/index.php?topic=27396.0

Maybe a "Mentors" forum to help out those of us who are just starting.  Lots of you all are experts that even when you answer simple questions you speak way over my head.

Thanks for asking.

I agree with lumber60 in Reply 7 above. Same problem can't get search to work anymore. I get the same error msg about language.
Can we get this fixed please?
Title: Re: New Forum!

This is starting to look really embarrasing since it should be quite easy to fix.
Give me access to the server and I'll fix the forum for you in no time. All I ask for in return is a couple of Mach 4 licenses or a decent ethernet motion controller :)

The search function is one of the most important functions!
It really limits the user support.
I've been a member for well over 7 years and have developed
my machine greatly by the search function.
Must be some crap going on, on the sidelines??????
PLEASE!

Hi Bryanna,

I have a real  sneaky feeling that if your Team have been aware of the Search issue since 28th.November then, by now, I would be ever so slightly doubtful of their competence.
Perhaps you could inform the Team that the Search facility has been broken and ask them if they could possibly spare some time to fix it, assuming that they are not too busy.
Many thanks from and on behalf of so many of the Forum Members.

This whole situation is more than a little worrying.
The lack of response and action from NFS makes me wonder if the company is going out of business.
I would not buy anything from them at this point.
Title: Re: New Forum!
Post by: thosj on January 07, 2019, 10:02:53 AM
Yeah, we need someone from NFS to at least show up here and say SOMETHING. I thought, too, that it is a little troubling. Has anyone tried the support system, are they at least THERE?

It's a new year and the first full, back-to-work day, so hopefully something will transpire.

Title: Re: New Forum! - work around for searches
Post by: Steve Stallings on January 07, 2019, 07:15:56 PM
For the duration of the MachSupport forums being located at:

  forum.machsupport.com/forum

instead of:

  www.machsupport.com/forum

You will find that links from Google or other messages in
the forum itself may point to the place where the forum
used to be. For example:

www.machsupport.com/forum/index.php?topic=27571.0

Such links will result in being redirected to the home page
of the forum.

The link can be hand edited to replace the "www" with "forum"
and the edited link will go to the correct location.

forum.machsupport.com/forum/index.php?topic=27571.0

If the link seems to have a ; followed by other characters
at the end of the link, strip off the ; and everything
behind it.

I do not know of any work around for the forum itself not
being able to search, so for now you will be forced to use
Google to search. Including the keywords "Machsupport" and
"forum" may help narrow down the returned hits from Google.

Regards,
Steve Stallings

Hey all,

I have zero access to the forum from the office. I agree that it isn't ideal in its current state, but it would take two of our developers a full day to get the forum updated and fully functional. It's on the agenda, though current projects must be completed before that can happen. We're definitely not going out of business any time soon, rest assured. I appreciate everyone who has been on here offering help and I am grateful for your patience and understanding. As always, our support team can be contacted directly at support.machsupport.com.

Thank you,
Bryanna

I guess that fixing the links in the forum would be an easy task for only one developper.

* Disable forum temporarelly
* run a simple "script" that will go through entire forum's database and change "www.machsupport.com/forum" with "forum.machsupport.com/forum"
* Enable forum again.

Steve, you have a typo: forums.machsupport.com/forum

OK, I think i am in the right place now???
If this is true, all that had to be said was NFS is not supported by Google so log in through another server.

So simple and no one could explain that to me after all this time and dancing around hmmm!!!

I think people forget that we are not all at the same level and newbies can easily feel intimidated.

We want new people to join our forum and feel confident with the support and not frustrated, we are not all at the same level!!

Thanks for listening to what i had to say!
I Hope this is the new forum.

Hi Don,

Perhaps change your forum appearance back to the ‘SMF Default Theme’ as Brett has described here;
