If you look at the video tutorials, Artsoft say that a one pulse per rev encoder is sufficiently accurate and recommend something similar to the Omron SD 5B.

hmmm. Im doing a search of the Omron site and am finding no such part number.
any one got a link to one.

I looked as well and couldn't find the number quoted - can anybody enlighten us ???

I used PDMX's spindle sensor, but see now that it's discontinued. You can just use a proximity sensor for this, possibly not use a metal disc with a cutout on the spindle, but a tab. But that might just be the NO/NC part reversed, I don't know. I had big problems with interference with mine for awhile, spindle would read in the millions of RPMs, Bob Campbell suggested I use a small capacitor across the signal lead and to ground. That fixed 90% of the problems, last one was I had the signal wire going into the power supply/ Gecko/ BOB box, and the wire was close to the torodial transformer. Tywrapped it up away from the trans and all was good.

I use one of these

220 Ohm resistor and a slotted disc and thats all, works perfectly on both the mill and the lathe and costs under £10 for the lot.(Thanks go to John P for telling me how :))

Could you send me a schematic of your set up, it sounds to be just what I want. I take it when you say you did a little work with the soldering iron, it was some sort of transistor circuit to link into the 25 pin parrallel port ??

From that I assume I can make two, one for my milling spindle and one for my lathe spindle (they both work from the same motor, but the gearing is different.)

jimpinder@tiscali.co.uk or post it on here and we can all download it.

I always seem to have trouble locating someone to give my money to when I embark on these adventures. anyone know the website of a good vendor for said "fairchild semiconductor, Phototransistor reflective object sensor"

don't keep us in suspense - who did you find

Man how selfish of me.
http://www.fairchildsemi.com/sitesearch/fsc.jsp?command=text&attr1=QRB1134&attr2=&t=0&i=sitemap+id&ia=1&text=QRB1134&as=1&render=1&w=

forgot to ask. I ordered the QRB1133 model without thinking.
but the litte diagram posted by DrStein99 is marked QRB1134.
will that make any difference?? cant really make out what the difference between the two is.

guess I should note that the only problem with this supplier is that although the part was only 2bucks. the shipping options are crap . ended up costing me $15.00 to have it mailed. >:(

Just for interest sake, check out http://www.usdigital.com this is the so called 10 dollar encoder company. They really sell a 10 dollar encoder, and it's good quality. I've used many, many of them, and in fact, Wescan (Linatrol) CNC uses them on their CNC controllers, I have sold their controllers coupled to flatbed CNC machines we manufacture, off course until I found Mach3, much, much cheaper. Just don't try to order the encoders from Linatrol, You'll pay 200 t0 300 dollars!

Got my Fairchild encoders fro a British company - something robotics - paid by Pay Pal. A bit expensive - £2.50 each ( 5 dollars ). Got four, cost £13.50.
