Title: Max velocity for Nema 24 motors
Post by: Thinder on September 27, 2018, 02:55:59 PM
Hey guys,

Im setting up my motors in mach 4,  Ive got a routakit  HD with a stdr-4c controller with nema 24 motors. Im at 2000 units per minute (x axis) and it seems like its still running great.  I don't know what a reasonable number would be.  How much faster can/ should I go????

I think Craig has given someone a good "formula" for stepper velocity before, somewhere on this forum.

But here at the shop, I keep bumping the velocity up a little at a time until the motor stalls; once I find where it is as fast as possible without stalling, I back off about 20%.  Works pretty good for us.

Thanks! That's the same method listed in the Mach manual but Ive never experienced a stall.  Is it hard to miss?

You'll know when it stalls.

Gerry is correct.  lol  You will know when it stalls.  The table will stop moving and it'll make a funny noise.

Thanks guys!   On my X axis im so fast now its uncomfortable.  Is there any reason I cant run at a lower velocity?  I assume you want any velocity that is satisfactory as long as its lower than that 20% of max velocity?

That's entirely up to you.  I have a Carbide Knife Grinder in the shop that can move at 200+ IPM but I've got it set to 40-50 IPM because I don't want the operators to crash the machine because they aren't paying attention.
