Title: newbie needing advice
Post by: gadawgsfan on May 02, 2018, 01:35:45 PM
when I ref all home everything comes to the front left corner, which is how I have it set for now, however when I jog everything back, right and down my numbers are negative, shouldn't they be moving positive direction?
Thank you

Milling machine?

Z down (into the work) is generally negative up is positive.

when you say jog back are you referring to the controlled point (tool) or the gantry/bed/table??

Thank you Dave for your response, it is a router machine. when I move the machine from its home position manually with my keyboard to the point of the material I want to cut which is toward the middle of the table my axis move to the negative numbers and I thought anything to the right, back and up should be positive. I am sorry if it is hard for me to explain or if I am not using the correct words but I am literally brand new and have never used any software or CNC before

while moving the Z up is is showing positive numbers but the X and Y are showing negative numbers when moving to the left and back

Does it match your cut files - i.e. does the CAM software output matching files that run ok??

If so then I would not change it -  it can be changed, but, it could cause issues.

When I load G-code and hit cycle start it moves away from my material and wants to start cutting off the material. I was thinking that the reason for this is because my machine is moving in a negative coordinate in both the X and Y axis. This is my first time trying to cut anything with it I have tried numerous times and have to stop it because it is moving to a different location that has no material. if this answers the question you are asking me

Ok,

try this, carefully - i have not done this so its up to you :)

Go to Config then Homing/Limits then check the "Reversed" options for X & Y  then save and see what effect it has.

You'll also want to double check that your machine is following the "Right Hand Rule". The post I've linked to below explains is and includes a nice graphic as well.

http://www.machsupport.com/forum/index.php/topic,10308.0.html

If your motors are not following the Right Hand Rule, changing the ActiveLow setting for the direction pin on each motor will reverse the direction.

Best wishes,
Bryanna

Dave, so I checked the reverse option on the them and then it changes the way they move when controlled by the keyboard, left goes right and right goes left, after reading this and looking at it I thought this would fix my problems but it started another one so I checked it back.

BryannaB, Thank you for your responding,  went to the link and that is WAY WAY over my head so I will have to continue to review and study it before I can understand what all that means, which may be part of my problem

Ok, so do what I suggested AS WELL as what Bryanna suggested - go into Ports&Pins and check the Active Low option for X&Y

I think that may solve it but note what the settings were originally so you can go back easy - it gets confusing real quick ;)

Hopefully that will reverse the direction display but not the keyboard action, maybe ;)

I cover the Right Hand Rule and some other basics in this video based on homing and soft limits: https://youtu.be/IXuuGRACU1I

I hope that helps!

Dave I am going to try this now and let you know in a little bit what is does.
BryannaB, So I went and watched the video and now it makes more sense,LOL  I guess I must be a more visual person because it made way more sense after watching it. so in using this rule and the hand example, my machine is not correct according to the numbers and thus I think is causing my problems below is a brief description of what I do

I open Mach3 go to file and load G-code I find the file from Vcarve Pro and it loads into Mach3

I hit ref all home and it does this in the lower left corner of the machine which is fine and machine coordinates is all zeros

I then move/jog with the keyboard of my computer to the left corner of my work piece that I want to start cutting,     (The numbers in the dro is going in a negative direction)

I then hit zero for X, Y, and Z

Then I hit cycle start, at this point the Z raises a little, the Y moves toward the front of the machine, and the X moves toward the left side of the machine, which is totally opposite of the direction it should be moving, it is moving away from my zero point that has been set for the work piece coordinates. At this point I have to stop the job because it would be cutting air and not my work piece,

Another issue that I think is part of the problem, if my machine coordinates is in the lower left corner of the table and I decide to move/jog to the back right corner, I thought my dro numbers should be going in a positive number and mine do not do that, they move in the negative direction according to the numbers

some how something is backwards (Y axis), when I move the machine toward the back shouldn't my numbers be going in the +/positive direction?
when I move the machine to the right (X axis)shouldn't my numbers be going in the +/positive direction?
the up and down (Z axis) when I go up the numbers are in the +/ positive direction and when I go down the numbers are in the -/negative direction
I think the Z axis is correct but I think the X and Y are backwards?

if you are at the left lower Corner of your machine

direction right X+
direction away from you Y+
Z axis up Z+

Did you try the suggestion i made earlier??

Yes your machine is not configured correctly.

Hi,
I suffered the same confusion when I started to. The trick it to consider the controlled point, usually the tip of the tool NOT the motion of the table.

Thus if the tool tip is at the left corner the when the table moves left the controlled point (tool tip) is effectively moving right, ie X+.
That where it gets cofusing, the table moves one way but the tool tip effectively moves the other way.

This is a router machine so i am presuming it has a moving spindle/tool and fixed table/bed - this makes it a bit easier to grasp as the controlled point is the moving point also.

In this case it seems to be configured wrongly as numbers are moving negatively when they should be going positive. ;)

TPS;  yes that is correct, however mine does not do that. When moving to the right it shows a negative progression when moving back away from you it also shows a negative progression

Dave, yes sir I did try your suggestions and it continued to do the same thing as it has been

Dave; yes you have it 100% correct that is exactly what is happening

Ok, lets get back to the start.

Lets do one axis.

You have the machine Y axis so if you press the up arrow on keyboard, the axis moves away from you BUT the numbers go negative?

can you please post a screenshot from Config -> System Hotkey's ?

Yes I can, however it would be later this evening. I am currently away from the shop for today and taking a break from trying to figure this out so I don’t take a torch to this whole setup. LOL

What i would next is flip the dir-active-low setting in ports and pins.

Now try jogging but with the OPPOSITE key you would expect so down arrow to move away from you and note the DRO readings +/-

Report back ;)

Ok, i will try that this evening Dave. And let you know what happens. Thanks again

first you have the Problem with the arrow key?

arrow up must give positive DRO, then get the movement according to the DRO.
