Title: HY VFD sparks and wont turn on... replacement?
Post by: Robotintheforest on January 03, 2018, 01:31:17 PM
Hi Folks I went to turn on my HY 2.2kw VFD this morning and it threw sparks out the bottom and wont turn on, I am assuming it is blown but open to other ideas (help!)
It is one of these:

I am wondering if this Hitachi will work with my spindle as replacement:

Any help greatly appreciated.

Sounds dead - its a crap-shoot with the Huanyang vfd's :)

The one you showed seems ok, it goes to 400Hz which is vital and the power rating looks ok too.

I would check the spindle, and make sure it's not damaged.
I would be suspect of a wiring issue from your description.

How to check the spindle for damage? I can't see anything obvious and I have been using this setup without fail since April. All the terminals felt/looked good when I opened up the VFD and I can't see any burns on any of the parts I can access without voiding the warranty. I have a 220v switch between the plug and the VFD, it usually takes a few seconds for the fan and LCD to come on when I power up the VFD but today it just threw sparks out the bottom where the wires go in and out and now won't turn on at all.

Measure the resistance between each pair of wires going to the spindle, and make sure all 3 are the same.
U-V
U-W
V-W

Also check each one to ground, and make sure there's no short.

Hi,
if one or more of the IGBTs have failed (shorted) then at turn on the inrush current will blow the input rectifier and/or the precharge circuit.

If I were repairing it ( I fix welders, inverter welders particualrly for a living) I would try to disconnect the DClink voltage from the IGBTs to see wether the input
rectifier, precharge and link capacitors are ok. Would also tell you wether the flyback inverter is still running. The flyback inverter is responsible for all the DC
auxilary voltage including the fan.

Thanks but that is all way beyond me, hopefully they will replace under warranty but in the meantime I am going to upgrade to a hitachi and if they will replace keep it as a spare.
