Title: erratic motor motion
Post by: RDJAY on November 12, 2017, 05:22:55 PM
Been using Mach3 for a few years to run a CNC router.  The PC died a few day ago. Sourced a replacement, loaded it up with a fresh install of XP and Mach3.  Using a PCI parallel card, the same card as was in the earlier machine.  Had a back of the config file, loaded it into Mach3.  Took awhile to get the parallel address figured out and now all axis motors are moving.

However they move very "jerky".  https://vimeo.com/242486792.  The best setting I can find is to put the "kernel" speed at 25000, anything higher and it gets worse, to the point of clearly missing steps/stalling the motors.  When I run "driver test" it seems to be fine up to 60000.

Any thoughts on what to try?

Thanks, Rick

Do you get a flat, smooth line with no spikes in Drivertest? How do you define "fine"?

There are some spikes, I was just going by the "system excellent" message.

Here's a vid of the test - https://vimeo.com/242509419

In the device manager, is your computer set up as Standard, or ACPI?   If the latter try changing it to Standard... that is what I did when I used to run my CNC from a laptop.

The "System Excellent" is a bit misleading, as you either get System Excellent, or failure.

I'd also recommend switching from ACPI to Standard. In some cases, it may require re-installing Windows.

Thanks, will give that a shot.

Switched from ACPI to "Standard", no change.  Uninstalled/reinstalled Mach3, no change.
