Title: Normal Stop (Alt-S) Can this be changed to the space bar?
Post by: Jim Neifert on June 28, 2007, 06:47:00 PM
I have searched thinking it was simple to do, now not so sure. Would like the space bar to do a normal stop such as the (Alt-S) does so that after can just hit cycle start to keep going. Anyway of doing this???

thanks for any help

Jim Neifert

PS thanks Brain and Art, things are working great. I did have a minor problem when I built a new computer, darn someone forgot to put a parallel port on the new motherboard!!!!

I,m sorry Jim but your question does not make sense to me.  ;D

Sounds like you are describing Feedhold as opposed to Stop.

Anyhow the way I assign keyboard shortcuts to functions not listed in the "System Hotkeys" setup dialog box is to use Screen4

Open your screenset in Screen4 and select the button you wish to change. There is the option to assign a keystroke.

Ok will try and explain better. When runing some G Code you can press <Alt-S> which is a Stop,,then press <Alt-R>Cycle Start to carry on with the g code. I was just wanting to change the hot key from <Alt-R> to the <Space Bar>

Jim

Going to guess this is not possible

Hey Jim,
Why would you rather stop than feed hold? The reason I ask is becasue if you are using mach for controlling things like your spindle and coolant, stop will turn them off and pressing start will not turn them back on. This is a potential for broken tools and other problems. Feed hold is prefered over stoping for other reasons as well. Stop is very sudden, it can cause you to loose position. It is recommended to rehome the machie if stop is hit while the machine is moving. I don't know for sure if it can be changed but if it could, I would guess Screen 4 is where it would have to be changed.

OK my point is that in that case you want to use Feedhold instead of Stop.

"Stop" will stop instantly and will most likely loose steps. If you start again it might not be accurate.

"Feedhold" will ramp down to a stop and will retain the integrity of position so that starting again will be accurate.

But if you really want "Stop" to operate with the space bar then use the method I described earlier.

EDIT:  Brett beat me to it.  ;D

Well didn't know about the chance of loosing steps with STOP, the only reason I prefered it to hold is that it did shut down the spindle and air supply I use for cooling.  So thanks for explaining it, I am still very much a newbie with CNC, at my age its good to be a kid at something....

thanks again
