Title: how to configure the estop?
Post by: neptunier on September 20, 2016, 05:32:51 AM
hi all,

one more problem with the estop.

i wired the estop switch to the bob and in the diagnostic screen the led flashes when estop is hit. other than that, nothing happens  :o , not even in mach3 with the estop button on the screen.

in my other mill i have a triple beast, there the machine stops.

it is a cheap chinease  bob (no charge pump) and leadshine amps. charge pump is not activated, no output activated so far.

am i right that i have to activate an output signal that then stopps the vfd and the motor amps? how can i get the mach3 estop button on the screen change its colour?

thanks,
michael

does mach go into reset when you trigger the e-stop?

no mach3 does nothing ;-)

Go Ports & Pins -> Inputs

Check that Emergency stop is not emulated and also that it is enabled

yes, estop is activated and not emulated.

The LED that flashes in the diagnostic screen when e-stop is pressed - does that input number match the number assigned to e-stop in ports & pins?

If it does then I am all out of suggestions as the flashing LED shows wiring and BOB ok but if Mach does not act on the signal then ??

If it does not match then that is the problem, put that input number into ports & pins and try again.

the led is on in the diagnostic screen, in the two rows that describe the parallelport. it goes out when i press the estop. the led "emergency" does not lid up pressing the estop, it stays out.

pin 13 is correct. maybe i have to put in a pullup resistor?

In the first post you said the led flashes when e-stop is hit, in the last post you say it goes out when e-stop is hit?

Only one can be correct.

So in diagnostics it is showing activity on pin13 when e-stop is pressed?

How is the switch wired - is it a normally closed one - e-stops usually are i.e. it open when you press it.

In ports and pins do you have pin 13 showing on the inputs tab where it says Estop ?
Also make sure you have the correct Port showing and that is NOT emulated.

sorry for my confusion. the switch is a normally open one, when you press it the led goes off.

should i put a pull down resistor to the estop output on the bob and connect the switch to +12V and the estop output pin? that way if i would hit the switch the output would be high. i guess thats how it normally is with a normally closed switch and the output pin is connected through the switch to ground.

If Mach is ignoring the switch by not going into reset, being high or low or n/c or n/o will not matter at this stage.

It will be wrong but try pressing the the e-stop, then see if you can get Mach to wake up by pressing the reset button on screen.

try that first

Button IN, press reset on screen, what happens?

the problem is that mach3 does nothing when i press the switch. i dont need to wake up mach3, it never goes to sleep >:(

i dont have charge pump connected, if that matters.

Does the BOB use the charge-pump or not?

You say it does nothing - but it is doing something - it is lighting that LED in diagnostics!

So, you push the button, the LED goes OUT, then press RESET does anything happen?

the bob cannot use charge pump, its a cheap one which came with the used cnc.

apart from unlighting the led when i press the estop nothing happens. the led is on all the time when estop is not pressed.

on the mach3 screen, nothing happens, i dont even have to push the reset button on the screen. this button does not switch colour as it usually does when pressing the estop.

Go into ports and pins, estop line on inputs tab, click "Emulated" to on - this should remove the estop button from the issue, can you then get Mach3 out of reset by pressing the reset button?

the problem is not getting mach3 out of the estop. when starting the program, i hit the estop button on the screen and i can machine.

the problem is that hitting the estop switch does nothing, except this one led lit.

Ah, now if that was clearer at the beginning :)

So, lets try getting it the right way round first, go into ports and pins, set or unset the "Active Low" box on the Estop line - reverse whatever its on.

Now, in diagnostics, I think this is right - I'm not near my machine, the LED should come ON when the estop is pressed instead of off.

Try that ;)

sorry for not being entirely clear with my descriptions.
i tried again, the led is lit and goes off if i press estop, no matter if i set active low or not.

I guess you won't have a spare N/C switch you can use - this is the generally accepted way of wiring an E-Stop button??

But either way, if Mach is ignoring the input then I am afraid I don't think i can help much, i have never seen this behaviour, it may be worth uploading your XML file so that it can be viewed - maybe just a simple error somewhere.

thanks. i am a few days off now, on my return i wil post the xml file.

It sounds like you're looking at the "Port 1 Pins Current State" LEDs on the Diagnostic screen.  Below this is a grouping of several LEDs labeled "Input Signals Current State".  At the bottom of this group is one labeled "Emergency".  What is that LED doing when you activate the E-Stop switch?  If it is not responding, then you do not have the Ports and Pins | Input Signals tab configured correctly and Mach3 will not respond to the switch.  Since you are seeing (I presume) the Port 1 Pins Current State" LED respond to the switch, the wiring appears to be ok.  However, you still need to tell Mach3 what pin this function is assigned to.  Get the EStop line enabled (green check) and make sure you set the port to 1 and pin to the pin you are using (pin 13 if I recall the earlier discussion correctly).  This should get the "Emergency" LED at least changing states in the "Input Signals Current State" section of the Diagnostic screen.  Then we can focus on getting it working with the correct logic with the "Active Low" setting if it is working backwards.  But the first step is getting that "Emergency" LED responding first.

Let us know what you see there and if you can get it changing states on that LED.

now it works and i feel really embarassed to tell the mistake. i used port 13 pin number 1  ??? , just switched the colums. i still had the order from motor outputs in mind, first the pins, then the port.

so anyway, thanks all for your help, now it is working perfect and my mill is complete. it is a 330kg artec zx45 mill, which i bought partely converted to cnc. yesterday evening i made my first steel chips :D

Cool!  Glad you got that figured out.  Like Dave said, simple things will keep us chasing our tails!
