Title: Need setup help for smoothstepper and C25S BOB
Post by: Christine88 on August 28, 2016, 02:29:58 PM
Ok I got the C25S plugged into my smoothstepper.  Smoothstepper is configured with my network card and seems to be recognized in mach4 but I need to know what to set in the smoothstepper and Mach configuration in mach4.  As is my motors will not respond to jog but they are locked so I know they are getting signals.  I looked at one of the videos from  Daz but the smoothstepper he used in the video was an early version so all the configuration screens were different.  I have the latest versions of everything.  Below is my system.

I have (5) Gecko 251S drivers for XYZAB axis and they are connected according to Gecko instructions.

Smoothstepper board NOTE: I do not know lf the jumpers are set right so I left them as received.

C25S BOB with port (1) configured as pin 2/3 X pin 4/5 Y pin 6/7 Z pin 8/9 A pin 1/17 B

NEMA 17 motors

I think I covered everything hopefully someone can help me with the correct settings.

Yeah I tried using the procedure in that link but the screens images are not the same as that of the latest plugin.
I'm using the 6 axis screen profile that comes with Mach4.

Is there an updated Smoothstepper procedure for the latest plugin 186?

It is my understanding that it is the latest documentation which is linked above (Andy is probably working on the update but everything takes it’s time).

Have you tried using the SCU ?

Well unless I have relevant procedure I'm left to guessing and that's not going to work.  I just don't know enough about this stuff to make guesses.

Here's an idea.  Is it possible to get the older plugin I think 184?  That way the procedure would match the plugin.

The info you require is on the Warp9 site

It's the one for the new 186 and it states that on the software screen it works because I have just done it

Have a look at DTG vidieo for the new beta plugin it's 99% of the 186 he explains it well

It's all there in the two places you just need to take your time and look and read till you understand , I cannot help you more nor can others as we do not have your machine to refer to , we do not know how you have it wired e.g. Pin outs , nor do we know if your setup needs active highs or lows

The one bit of info I will give you that is not easily found is that the inputs to port two are inverted in respect to port one ,e.g. If it needs a high on one you need a low on port two due to there being only one logic gate on two nad two on one

Pleas have a look at the two sources I have recommended they will help , when you sort it out yourself you will understand how it works this will help in the future

Regards Stuart

Ps they are nearly identical it's only under the hood changes

I went warp9 and I think the setup guide is the one I've been talking about.  The screens are different.  I'll have to see if they will send me the older plugin 184 so everything matches.

In pin configuration.  Why does it reference port 2 and 3 but not 1?  The C25S has port 1 port 2

Because the ESS has three

Not sure what you mean the screens are different to me the screens for the configure of the plugin are the same in 184 and 186

Now do not take this the wrong way but you are going to the plugin configure .flyout ESS , you do NOT  use the Mach configure screen if you do it will screw up the plugin

The first screen you see is an instruction screen on how to proceed if you do not see this you are in the wrong place

I've been using the mach4 6 axis profile because my CNC is 6 axis.  Maybe that's the problem.  Also I have my step dir connected to port 1 on the C25S.

The Plugin is still classed as in Beta, A complete new set of videos is in the pipeline but not until its made official.

All the basic information you need to setup the config for the ESS can be found at http://www.warp9td.com/index.php/gettingstarted/setting-up-the-smoothstepper-and-mach4#MachFourInitialESS_NEW_PLUGIN

Are these plugins compatable with five axis or just 3?  My CNC is 5 axis.

Are we talking about the same thing I am not referring to any mach4 screen but the ESS setup screen , if I have the wrong end of the stick then I am sorry

From reading your posts I assumed yo needed help I configuring the ESS C25x combo maybe I was wrong

As I said I have just done a 4 axis mill conversion from a Far East board no wiring diagram and all wires the same colour this included 9 limit switches it was simple to do from the info fron DTG and Warp9 and From the c25x manual

I will leave it to other my 70year old brain cell is tired

The Mach4 screens where you click on configure and then select plugins then either ESS warp9 tech design or Mach.  Selecting either one will open a configure screen.

The only  difference in the ESS plugins 184 and 186 is that 186 has the PROBE enabled where as 184 didnt, and if i recall homing was added in 185, you have to remember when downgrading a plugin this could be bad as there might be a new way of doing things within the core and the old plugin may not have this implemented.

If you can explain what is different would help, if you follow the instructions Andy from Warp9 made in the link you cant go wrong.

Ok one difference is input signals in the smoothstepper plugin configuration mapped Pin.  All I have there are port-pins but in the setup guide it shows things like IN ESTOP.  I think the pin config are the same though I don't know if I should select inputs or outputs.  The same thing in output signals.  All I have under mapped pin1 are just port-pins when I click the drop down.

In the Mach configuration output signals the screens are completely different.  Mine has like X++ and X-- and so on.

What is the bare minimum that I need to configure to get my motors right?  Also bare in mind I have 5 axis.

just to be clear, I'm selecting the Mach4 6axis profile upon opening Mach4.  I'm not creating a profile because that only gives me 4 axis and I need 5 axis.

Here is a very quick way of doing the X Axis (Motor 0) you will have to do same with all other motors.

Ok I did exactly as the video instructed but the X axis would not jog.  The DRO moves but not the axis.  The green lights on the smoothstepper indicate communication with the PC is good.  I think maybe the C25S board?  I've heard some bad things about it. Jumpers 2 3 4 on the smoothstepper are jumped.  X axis step dir is 2 and 3 on the C25S.  Is there a way to remove the C25S and connect directly to the port pins on the smoothstepper?  Just the X axis?

I'm going to try a different approach. I saw this video you made https://youtu.be/HIE0k6mu2yc and I just happen to have the break out board in the video.  So I'm going to follow that video and hook it up.  It appears to support 5 axis.  I'll need to get that ribbon cable though.  Is there anything special about it?

It works!  I turned on my PC today and tried moving the X axis and it jogged but it will only jog in one direction with X- or X+ and if I click X- even in incremental mode the axis just keep turning but with X+ it moves incrementally.

That sounds like the X Step connection is working but the X Direction connection is not.

That has happened to me before.

It was a careful checking of the output of pin 3, as well as all of the ESS and Mach4 settings relating to X Dir signal.

It was so long ago now that I can't remember whether it was a wiring problem or software settings problem, but I got it working again by checking the wiring first, then software.
