Title: Suddenly rough stepper.
Post by: james elder on May 14, 2007, 11:55:08 AM
an hour into a job I hear something isn't right. a problem has developed on the X axis, where it is losing 5mm at a time, going x+, and a few mm x-. I have dissassembled down to the motor itself, and the problem is still evident - hand held the motor will tug tug tug twich twitch twitch as it turns, rough, like a missing car engine, instead of a nice sweet whine, unless I ask for some rapid movement, when as it reaches higher speeds, it becomes smooth.

Classic symptoms of.....?

Thanks in advance.

Hey James,
What kind of drives are you using? Do they have any tuning provisions? At what speeds do they run good and bad? Is this a new problem or a new set up?

Hi Chaoticone.

They've been running fine, it's a new problem, developed mid-job.  They are all tuned nicely, and I checked that nothing had got altered in the motor tuning.
I dunno what the drives are, i'll try & see

Hi all

Well, the new motor does the same, do I guess it's not that.

What's the next step?
Nothing changed, it went rough mid job. What could alter and cause this problem?

Swap over a drive and see if the problem moves with it.

Thnks Hood, will do. All terminals or 1 through 6 or what? (they are a way apart)

Also noticed the X power on light dims well before the others after power off....

If your cables will reach from one drive to another just swap over the complete plugs but if they dont then unscrew the suspect  drive and move it over and connect in the other drives plugs.

Not :( but :). You've found the problem for me thanks.

No UK supplier then?

Did you say about £80 Shipped from the States? But compared to the £175 i shelled out for the MAE 300 3438 430 a8, the other day....anyone interested?  No it was sale or return, thanks Cetronic, so it's cost me a few quid to confirm it wasn't the motor.

You don't have a spare Gekko anyone? I was halfway through this urgent job, as always....

Thanks again Hood.
