Title: BAD DECISSION
Post by: lbrdathe on January 27, 2016, 05:31:09 PM
I bought a 3040Z TS series CNC from China about 3 years ago. I wish I would have bought a well known brand with life support, although they are much more expensive. I have tried to follow the directions for Mach3 set up with negative results. I don't feel I have the correct info for setup or I am missing something obvious. Remember I am green as green can be, so I need lots of help. I don't give up easy and would like to get this running before I croak!! Someone with patience please walk me through from A to Z. I see another 3040 owner with a working CNC is on the forum. I would love to see the setup instructions that came with his CNC. Thank you all who care to help.

Lots of us here to help. As I do not know this machine I found this
from a guy who has / is setting one up. He gives some basics.
Ask away.

There are many variations of Mach3 controlling a CNC router.
I would suggest that you get a copy of the Mach3 Manual and
start reading basic setup. Here is a block diagram of a machine.
Do you have a computer - was it hooked to your machine?
What motors do you have?
What motor drivers do you have?
What interface from the computer to the motor drivers do you have?
Not trying to discourage you but for anyone to help you, you need
some basic understanding of the CNC router so when someone suggests
something to you, you have a basic understanding of what they are talking
about.

Thank you for your replies. I will post as much info as I can find next week. I have read the manual and will continue to reference it.  Thanks again Bob. :)

The controller is hooked up to the printer serial port 378.The only # I can find on the controller is Jiping V3.8.  JP-3163B is the # on the driver board. JP1635A is the # on what I believe is the 4th axis board. The Motors are N1312. I hope this info will be helpfull. Thanks again!  Lawrence

Hi Lawrence,

If you post your .xml file (the one located in the Mach3 folder named <your profile>.xml [typically Mach3Mill.xml]) copy and rename it to lawrence.xml then use the 'reply' tab and Additional Options to post it. Then we can check you Mach3 settings and hopefully see if there are any problems with your set-up.

Tweakie.

The setup for that controller should be very basic.
Would need to see a pic of the controller, to see if it has spindle or relay controls.
make sure the motors for 1 are enabled.
x 2 step-3 dir  step port and direction port are 1 for all motors
y 4-5
z 6-7
a 8-9

Estop is pin 10.  With the button out you should be able to click reset in mach.  If it wont reset saying EStop requested, the set the E stop active low.  Also on port 1
Motor tuning I think is going to be 400 steps per. with about half in the acceleration slider.

This should get the machine moving.

I got the router 3040 router that was painted tan.  The controller is a POS I am sad to say.  I made sure that it did work, then I ripped the motors off and put a new set of motors and controller on it.  Made a HUGE difference in performance.  In some drag engravings, I noticed that the OEM setup would round corners and make funky shapes.

Tweakie.

Hey Lawrence, Please send the entire file, not just part of the contents.
Copy and Paste it to your desktop, rename it as Tweakie instructed and attach it using "Additional Options" in the lower left corner of the "Reply" window.

That is the exact same controller I got with mine.  From the corner of the router in the picture it looks like the exact same machine I got.

I hate to sound the way I am going to sound, but man, the electronics suck.  I did get mine to run, but it was not great.  I have seen alot of issues with the quality of wire they used on these.  Sources of many issues.
Putting a G540 and new motors, or possibly using the stock motors will make a HUGE difference.  I used a little better setup then the G540 because I had it already.

Where are you located?  In the US?  Does the mill computer have/or can it have internet access?  I could use team viewer to log into it and check a few things.  The setup is very straight forward on these, but if you are not getting mach3 to output, then its a mute point.  The mill computer, is it 32 bit windows?  Are you using the on board printer port?  Add in PCI card?  USB pulse generator?

The controller is hooked up to the printer serial port 378.

The XML data you posted shows the port address as 888. Better double check that.

Good catch there overloard, there is the major problem right there.  If that setting is not right, it will never ever ever ever (catching on here?)  work.

The controller is hooked up to the printer serial port 378.

The XML data you posted shows the port address as 888. Better double check that.

Russ

As pointed out by my friend Tweakie :   " ....  888 is probably correct as it is the decimal of 378 Hex"

Still, it might help us to help you if you post the complete .XML file.
Kind regards  :)
Russ

If you cannot get it, send me a message, I will talk with you and teamviewer into the PC and look around.  I am sure we can get this.  Although, I would highly recommend a UC100 for the PC connection.  I just love them

Hi Larry, you never really said what your machine will, or will not do.

When you power it up, do the motors lock up and hold steady ?
You have no hotkeys setup so keyboard jogging will not work.
But if you hit the TAB key, you will see the pop-up pendant.
Clicking on the axis arrows should jog the machine. Does it ?

Gotta start somewhere.

Regards,
Russ

No. I do not get motor movement.  Although when I hit the X,Y, or Z keys numbers change.

the numbers will move in mach3 because its an open loop system, there is no feedback from the motors to tell mach "Hey, Im moving"   mach always assumes that its working.

Larry the step port and dir port in your XML have to be set to port 1.  it tells mach3 which port to use for those pins.

Also, your motor tuning Steps Per is set way to high.

For the steps per for X and Y try 640.  If it moves to much then half that.  I say that because I done remember if I made my 3040 router XML file I have with 1.9 degree steppers or .8 steppers that are twice the resolution.
For Z try 800 or half that.
Velocity start with 1000 as your set in metric.  Accel slide the slider 3/4`s the way to the right.  Remember that when you make a change in one axis of the motor tuning YOU MUST CLICK THE "SAVE AXIS SETTINGS" BUTTON before going to the next axis.

This will be my last post on this topic. Because of the enormous amount of help from fixitt I have my cnc up and running. I can't thank Robert enough for the patience he demonstrated and the commitment that was shown during his efforts to help. Way beyond the call of duty. Thanks to all the others who got me going in the right direction.  ;) Lawrence

Hi Gregors,

Attach your .xml file (the one from your Mach3 folder <your profile>.xml) and we will try to identify the problem.
Copy and rename it to gregors.xml then attach using Additional Options tab.

I am not sure but a fresh install may not be necessary - click on Help / About Mach3 and that should show the version number you are using.

Do you have details about the breakout board / controller you are using ?

That is just about the oldest version of Mach3 you could possibly be using.
Download version 062 from here: ftp://anonymous:guest@ftp.machsupport.com/Mach3/Mach3Version3.043.062.exe (ftp://anonymous:guest@ftp.machsupport.com/Mach3/Mach3Version3.043.062.exe)

At this stage - Check that JP2 (on your 3163B) is connected between pins 2 & 3

Can you get out of E-STOP in Mach3 ?

I think you need to change your Ports & Pins Motor Outputs to:

X step 2
X dir 3
Y step 4
Y dir 5
Z step 6
Z dir 7
A step 8
A dir 9

Follow the wires and check which pin your EStop is connected to and make sure that is the pin specified in Inputs for EStop.
(The 3163B diagrams show pin 15 but yours may be connected differently).

Check JP2 (as mentioned previously).
