Title: USB to serial port.

Will a USB to serial adapter work with the Modbus to the motor drive or do i have to have dedicated serial port on my mother board?

It should work fine, I have used them in the past for a PLC although I do prefer onboard ports. Thats not to say I have any issues with USB, just I think USB is not the best interface to have been invented.

Yes, but with the disappearing serial ports on many computers whats one to do?

The company "CommFRONT" makes usb to serial adapters and also has free and licensed programs to monitor the serial data. They have a wealth of information available.
