Title: Lazycam Lines + Arcs
Post by: skylab on February 07, 2014, 08:05:11 PM
I converted a gear to DXF. It looked good on Lazycam. The lines and arcs were connected to eachother but they were in different colors. Arcs looked green and Lines looked blue, which meant that the CNC machine treated them differently. So when I try to make the part with the CNC. The CNC spindle starts with the line, then stops, goes up (Z), then comes down and works on the arc, then goes up again and stops, then goes down again and does the line. It treats the arc and line as if they are not one piece ... Very inefficient. So it takes me 4 times as long to finish a part. How do I make lazycam consider the arc and line as one? Attached is an image of what I'm talking about. Thank you!

Sounds like the lines and arcs are not joined together. Can you post the .dxf?

Here is one example. Thanks!

Can you attach the "lcam" file and I'll have a look when i get a chance.
There may be no answer.......

Could not open in Autocad 2004 or Sheetcam
But did in Artcam and Rhino
saved as dxf they look fine

It opens in AutoCAD 2013, and looks fine there. I don't use  LazyCAM, so I can't tell you why it's doing that.

The problem is not whether it opens or not. The problem is my Mach3 is considering the lines and arcs as separate, and it works on each piece seperately instead of working on the whole thing as a solid piece.

Change the "connection tolerance" in LCam to .010 and see what you get.
It works here. Looks like your arcs and lines are not connected.

That's it. The I zoomed in very closely and some parts were not attached to each other but they were not visible without zooming. I changed the tolerance and clicked optimized and they got connected. Thanks a lot Overloaded and everyone else.

My point was what I seen in the file provided looked fine. All lines looked connected.
I just reported what I found and provided a couple of alternatives to see if there was a difference for you.
Sorry I've never used LCam, just trying to help.

Good job.
Best to make sure it is drawn properly than to rely on the CAM to compensate for errors or mistakes.
Seen this one before.

A few comments:
- Make different layers for the machining tasks that you wish to do in CAD
- always check that all entities in CAD connect
- don't use polylines / break them up in CAD
- save as a version 12 dxf format

After you clean the drawing un-enable layers and check and see if all is connected as the layer should not have much pathing and be continous. I usualy use .0001 for a tolerance but sometimes there is small error on import to LC and thus you need to change the tolerance. In this case .001 ( or even greater as Russ noted) worked.

You really need to think in terms of machining tasks when in CAD. Do not waste time trying to do CAD work in LC as it is only
meant to be an importer.
