Just tried cutting some programs and every time Mach 3 stops and the computer says not responding and I have to shut it down and unplug the smoothstepper and then plug it back in,restart Mach and same thing happens any ideas
-
Sounds like the SS is losing communication and Mach is just hanging waiting for communications.
Is it a USB SS or Ethernet?

I have the usbss

Sounds like your USB ports may be set to save power. Read here how to set to always on: http://www.ehow.com/how_6791680_disable-power-management-windows-xp.html

Will try tomorrow

Fixed the usb setting ran machine 4.5 minutes and it quit again,I noticed that one of the lights on the smoothstepper were out

I think you may be having problems with the USB SS losing communication for some reason. It could be related to the problems others saw due to noise, in fact I saw this on one machine and the cure for it was to remove a couple of components on the SmoothStepper to isolate the Gnd connection of the SS from the Computer. I think you can do the same by cutting through the shield of the USB cable at the SS end of it.
I will see if I can find the thread regarding this issue and paste in a link in a minute.

I will try that today if that does not work I will find another computer without 64 bit and trash the ss,I am getting pretty frustrated
-
I ran a program without the motors being plugged in and it ran all the way through

Is that all you did, disconnect the steppers? Did you change any of the power settings? Check the USB settings?
-
Ran 6 programs with everything running except my router and they all finished with no problems
-
So is your opinion that noise from the router is killing the operation? Going to be hard to cut your file without the router ;-) You never answered the question about the power settings.

I just got a smooth stepper working this week so I'm not an expert. My Smooth STepper connects through the Ethernet port. On my computer the Ethernet plug is a little loose on the computers Ethernet port. Wiggle the cable just a little bit and the Smooth Stepper shuts down due to lack of communication. In actual use I'll need to tie down the Ethernet cable to eliminate the wiggle.
Just think, the old parallel port was a nice snug connection with 2 mounting screws.
Just a thought,

Look at the conductors on the male end of the Ethernet cable going into your PC. Pull them up enough to maintain contact. This is not a SS problem, more like a cheap Chinese cable issue. I use the USB version but have you gone thru all of the optimization steps? If it anything similar to the USB version, it could make all of the difference in the world. Btw you would never get the PP to achieve the same transmission rates (in my understanding).
