Title: Not working after update
Post by: daibeer on September 14, 2013, 09:34:13 AM
Hi guys,
I just updated mach3 to the latest version and it's thrown a wobbly.  Basically, I done a 5 inch test cut but it  seems to go through the correct motions but cut approx. 5 mil.  I have been told to check gcode but it seems ok.  Is there anything in the config I need to look at.
regards
Dave
ps.  I am a comparative convert so simple talk would be appreciated.

Hi
Thanks for the reply, I ve tried that and I also tried the "setting", "Set steps per unit" but the movement was so small the output was something like 20,000 to input into the motor tuning.  Obviously didn't work, Im thinking of a total uninstall and reconfig, unless someone suggest something easier.  Cheers
Dave

please post both your gcode file and your xml file. (if you don't know where your xml file is or what it's called then look bottom right of your mach screen for "your profile name" - now look in c:\mach3 for "your profile name".xml. Now copy it to your desktop and rename it to daibeer.xml and attach it to your post (using the FULL reply "additional options" i.e. not the quick reply).

Have a look at  the first line of your program, if its got a g21 your program is in metric, if its g20 its imperial. If there isn't a G20 in put one in and see what happens. When I first loaded the latest update it did it in metric and all the programs I wrote were in metric although I thought I was doing them in Imperial. Just a thought. But be careful as I'm not sure what it will do to your feed rate!! Jim

OK - your gcode is fine in as much as it has G20 - so inch units (and your default units are inch). However have a word with whoever wrote your post and ask them to fix their space bar - either that or ask them iftheywritesentenceslikethisaswell.

Anyway - according to your specs you have screws with a 10mm lead and a microstepping factor of 8 and standard 1.8 degree steppers so your steps/per (inch) in motor tuning should be 4064 if my maths is correct.

Hi
Is 4064 acceptable in the motor tuning? The norm appears to be around 266 in all the tutorials.  Don't want it to kill itself?

I use 10160 for 3 of my axis and 200 for a axis...     See your info from manufacturer....

Steps per unit will be whatever your hardware dictates, likely the tutorials  you have been seeing are metric setups where the steps per unit will be 25.4 times smaller than Imperial setups as there are 25.4 mm's in an inch.

Dave

I've done this a couple of times before - I wouldn't have given you it if I thought it was incorrect or "dangerous".  ;)

According to the specs you gave this is correct - and no damage would occur whatever number you put in - it just wouldn't travel the correct distance.

Hi all,
Firstly, many thanks for everyones help, it is really appreciated.  I managed to get things sorted by a complete uninstall followed by in install.  Don't know why or what happened, but it seemed to do the trick.

Thanks again everyone.

...and the steps/per are?

Hi
Sorry for the delay in answering.  I used the auto setup in settings to get the steps count.  The one where you put in the amount of distance to travel and input how far it actually travelled and ive got it very close as I'm only doing relief carvings so the steps count was 6800.  Hope this is what you wanted.
regards
Dave

Curious number indeed... It just doesn't align (anywhere close) with the specs you posted - neither does it align particularly closely with any pitch of ballscrew I've come across - metric or Imperial.

That said a quick google results in at least 4 different specs for the "High-Z S-1000/T" depending on where you buy it. So maybe you have the 5th. ;D
