Title: I went to cut my first operation and ..... nothing..
Post by: mrich0908 on August 31, 2013, 07:03:40 PM
Well it wasnt exactly nothing. All day today for about 12 hours I was setting up read preparing getting everything in tram. Broke my starett dial indicator. (Turn the spindle on and forgot it was in there)
I ran the XY to there farthest negatives and Z to the farthest positive. Hit reference all.  loaded g code , zero out XYZ regen tool path.
The cnc rose to the top of z then brought xy to the farthest limits.
Im all excited  ...
It goes to the corner I specified in cam right as its bout to take its first cut the motors start pulsing is the only way I can describe it  . they werent event moving .001
System jogs fine I set backlash up today fine . If I tell it move .030 it moves that distance.
My head hurts I can really use some help.....

I was looking at my g code Vs the road runner file.
the feed rates are extremely different mine is at 3 4 road runner is at like 50-60. Could it be i generated the feed rate so slow its barley moving ... I dunno

I went into my cam changed the feed rate , depth of cut shortened the gcode same thing.
Heres a vid also . Ill upload the gcode but its the on I asked you to look at .
I turned the spindle off for the vid because I knew it wouldnt cut anything .

You have a G21 (metric units) at the start of the program so the longest axis move hence size of road runner will be 0.100" square. That could be the problem. Jim

What's my xml ? What's that do .
Jim I designed the part in metric and inches . Every time I load mach in settings it changes my its from inches to metric. So how can I make sure it stays as a standard . In cam ?

A few members have had a similar problem, I don't use any cam software so can't help I'm afraid but suspect you can define the base unit of measurement.  I did have a different problem when I first set up Mach I inadvertently managed to switch the metric/imperial units when doing the basic set up so my machine was doing things in metric although I had written them in Imperial, I had to reload the Mach software and redo the set up. If you do that remember to save your licence file some where safe first! You program looks as if its in imperial, have you gone into edit file and changed the G21 to G20 on the set parameters line, it then should cut 2.5" square. Jim

Thanks for the help Jim ,
License won't be a problem since I'm still in demo mode and trail mode on all the soft ware I use.
I'm not pre paired to pay for any soft ware if its not compadible with me my brain  or my stuff.

As Jim has said it is G21 in code but it looks like dimensions are meant to be metric and thus the axis are hardly moving.
I was wanting to see your xml to see if your setup units were correct and for inch but if you try as Jim suggested and change the G21 to a G20 and see what happens, if not you can attach your xml by looking for the profile name when Mach is opened. You then go to the mach folder and look for a file of that name with a .xml file extension. Copy that to your desktop then rename to mrich0908.xml then use the additional options on the reply page to attach the renamed file.

Ok I found it but Im on my way out the door to  olive garden with my kids n wife . I would love for you to look at it any ways . My lead screws are metric 2.5mm from what I read. I personally didn't measure them .
I have my steps per @ 16393.44262 when I took the backlash out the tables and did the steps per unit axis calibration this what it gave me . If I Put my dial indicator on and tell it to move 1/2 in it moves a half inch now. So.. My guess is there right but give me a little bit I have to go eat then when I get back Ill go into the garage and get the xml file.
Im defiantly going to try what jim wrote.
Thank you for the help
Mark

I calculated my steps per an inch wrong . It was suppose to be 16,256 steps per inch. Ill run the program in the am to see if that fixed it but it still dosent explain why its crawling along.

As Jim said the code looks to be written in inch units by the size of it but it has a G21 at the start which will make it run as mm. So 2.5ich would only move 2.5mm. Likewise whatever feedrate you have will be seen as metric. I dont have the code here but think you mentioned 3, so instead of the intended 3 inch per minute feedrate your axis would only move at 3mm per minute.
A simple change of the G21 in the code to a G20 should resolve these issues.

Thanks allot every one. Jim switching to G20 worked everything out for me . I also had to go int home switches & limiits and reverse two motors.
I think I got most of the other stuff figured out. ..... Except
The machine is now following the gcode from the cam software. but instead of the circle it was suppose to cut being in the center its up and to the left a little. Any sugestions?
It cuts great though . Im surprised this little machine is as good as it is. I cant wait to CNC my Miini Knee mil (6x26)
Heres a short vid of the DM.

If the circle is not exactly where the code is saying it should be then you may be losing steps.
Looked at the video, kind of looks like it is pausing at the cardinal points of the arc, maybe you are in Exact Stop mode? Might want to try Constant Velocity if you are.

yes I did switch it to exact stop .
thats what another person told me to do when setting up.
