The easiest way is to get a breakout board and also it gives the benefit of optically isolating the computer from the drives. There are many breakouts available, the ones I have used are the PMDX122 from www.pmdx.com and the one from CNC Building Blocks www.cncbuildingblocks.com

I used a combo board from http://www.campbelldesigns.com and have been very happy with it.  The documentation is good and Bob responds to email questions very quickly.  Presently running it on a bridgeport with servos and gecko 320's.
