Title: Beginner Problems with Mach3 Installation in WinXp
Post by: tyrantartist on June 20, 2013, 01:19:34 PM
Hello all, and thank you for taking the time to read this. I'm very new to Mach3 and am slightly unfamiliar with the nuances of windows XP. Nevertheless, I've tried repeatedly to download then run the Mach3 demo unsuccessfully. The installation goes fine, I restart my computer, open the program, agree to the terms, and select profile, the mach3 'banner' shows briefly, but then closes.

I've relentlessly tried uninstalling and reinstalling mach3. Windows XP is fresh, updated, and at 32bit. What am I missing??? I'm at a loss and would greatly appreciate any direction.

(For what it matters, I can install and run Mach2 just fine.)

Do you have any other programmes on the computer? Maybe an AntiVirus?

I really appreciate you taking the time to notice my S.O.S signal. I just bought this used PC with a clean install of windows XP. It came with Norton Antivirus, and I've already removed that. I reinstalled mach3 but it still closes while opening. There really aren't too many other programs loaded except mach2 which I ran as a test.

Make sure Mach2 is closed before trying to open Mach3.
To check do a Ctrl Alt Del and see if there is any mention of Mach2 in the Processes.

Hood, yes I tried that as well. There's currently no tasks running whatsoever.

Go into the Mach3 folder and double click the DriverTest.exe and see if that runs.

It runs and appears the pulse rating is excellent at 25khz.

Ok thats good, try again with Mach3 and if not it may be worth trying to install an older version to see if that helps, maybe ver062 which you will find here ftp://machsupport.com/Mach/ (ftp://machsupport.com/Mach/)

I reinstalled it but still won't fully open or run - I chose a profile and the mach3 banner appears but then immediately closes. Does that make any sense to you?

(Again though, thank you so much for taking the time to help me half way across the world! Encounters like this solidify my faith in humanity.)

I dont really know what to suggest next other than possibly doing a reformat and install of XP. It certainly sounds like something is interfering with Mach loading but what I have no idea and I cant recall seeing that issue posted before.

Are you running AVG anti-virus by chance?

No antivirus, nor any other programs simultaneously. I'm really puzzled...

Is this a Dell PC desk top and is XP updated to service pack 3? The reason I'm asking is because about 5 or 6 years ago Dell used a build in small security program in XP for it's laptop units that also inadvertently got carried over to some of the desk top pc's. One of the nasty side effects of the security program on the desk top models is it prevented some programs from loading and running. I know because it happened to my Dell 8400 running XP Pro. Not with Mach 3 but with another program. Apparently it causes the run.exe to hang during the loading process because of a system registry error. The bad news is its not a software fixable problem... its a BIOS bug problem. At the time Dell would replace the motherboard however that option is long gone now. The problem effects random software but not all software for some unknown reason. I spend several weeks digging into this issue. Due to the age of the old Dell I gave up and moved everything to a new Windows 7 platform. I'm using the Dell 8400 for Mach 3 only now.

One other suggestion is return the pc if it's possible or pick up another cheap XP machine. I've seen used XP's for as little as $100 on Ebay.

Thank you all for the replies - I'll try installing on another PC as soon as possible. More than anything though, I'd REALLY like to know what's holding it up.
