Almost at the final hurdle and after finally sorting out the connections and getting my spindle turning correctly ..... the old spindle drive inverter/controller has given up in a puff of smoke, well it was nearly 30yrs old!!. Not yet sure how much damage has been done and whether it can be repaired, as I will get it checked out. But if it is damaged beyond repair, can anyone else recommend a suitable single to 3 phase inverter/controller?
My motor spec is as follows -

Am I right to think that mach3 can control this via a pwm 5khz signal? via my diycnc sp4dc board

the diycnc board gives you 0-10v output to run the inverter, and is run from the step and direction signal from mach.
when you setup the inverter you will need to set the max frequency to 100hz

I use a GS2 series drive from Automation Direct. It is single phase in 3 phase out. I control it via the digital inputs for manual FWD/Stop/REV and a speed pot from the control pendant switches or control FWD/Stop/REV and/or the speed from Mach via modbus. Modbus makes for a clean install and if your not going to need to be able to swap around form auto to manual control it is pretty straight forward to set up.

Angel tech, what is the relevance of setting up the inverter frequency to 100hz, when the motor is only 50hz?

your motor will probably run at 1425 rpm at 50hz, so if you set the inverter to run at 100hz max frequency you'll get approximately 2850 rpm at the motor.

Ah ok, yeah as before the max rpm was 2500 when programmed through the original control, even though motor states 1400 rpm.
If I wire in a potentiometer to the new drive, is it correct that, that will make mach3 redundant for spindle control?

wire in a potentiometer?? to get more of a manual control of the spindle, obv you can tweek the spindle speed via mach but, to have the ability to fine tune the spindle manually via a dial seems a logical option, but as yet I don't know if I want that in my setup. I'm just going through some online manuals regarding the wiring up of inverter drives, am looking at the parker ssd650, as the stepper drivers are parker thought might as well keep to the same make, this is the manual - http://www.inverterdrive.com/file/Parker-SSD-650-Easy-Start-Guide, section 10 shows how to wire up a potentiometer and reading between the lines how to wire mach into this drive, I'm thinking that using mach as the potentiometer then my 0v to input 1 and speed ref signal (10v) to input 2 (AIN1), the spindle will only go in cw direction but that's ok.

you can command any speed you like with mach and fine tune via the screen. But yes you can use a pot.
