gentlemen; i was machining a guitar in 2" blue styro foam when mach froze, i had to close mach and reload and all was fine. i was past half way the code when it froze, i was doin' 120 ipm. this the second time this has happened. i built my machine, it's direct drive, 5 start,hobby cnc board and steppers, it's pulsing at a little over 27k, 1/8 micro step,i think my steps per is about 3200, i really can't get my steps per set right because it moves to fast to read the dial indicator revolutions. any way to slow it down? thank you for your help, richard stanley.

Richard, hit the tab key and the mpg fluout will appear. Set your slow jog rate to what ever percentaenge you want. Hit the tab key and the flyout will disappear again.
With all that being said, you should be able to do the math to come up the correct steps per. Whats the lead on your screws?

thank you, Chaoticone, the lead is .5 " per rev ,it seems like that would be a 2 pitch , also the spread sheet has a default value of 10 in the micro stepping window, i am not familiar with that value. shouldn't it be something like 1/8 or 1/4? thank you very much richard .

.5 per rev lead on the screws=2, X 200 (360/1.8 degree steppers)=400, X 10 microsteps= 4000 steps per.
.5" per rev on the screws seems awful high. I would think they woould be .200" or maybe 5mm?

5 Start, .5" Lead = 10 pitch (.100") correct ?

Russ and Brett; i bought these off ebay the seller is IMSRV ,i think it stands for Imservice. i'm looking at the page i printed off ebay it says each revolution of screw moves .5 inch linearly.
accurate to.009 inch /foot. it says 1/2-10, is that 10 pitch? won't that be .100 x 5 =.5 ? by all means check em' out on ebay . i don't want em' to fool me. richard.

Set your indicator up then command a move using MDI and control the feedrate with G1 F10.

You are right ... 1/2-10, 5 start is .5" per rev, 10 pitch

so ... 2 turns per inch.
Lead = distance traversed by 1 revolution
Pitch = threads (peaks) per inch (Imperial), Metric is the actual dimension peak to peak
Steps per = Number of revolutions per unit (in your case 2) x motor resolution x micro stepping.

Yup, .5 lead it is.

got more confusion; 4000 steps has to right but now ,i tell it to move .5 " and it moves .622' does this mean i have change my micro steps to 1/4 or 1/2 i'm on 1/8.

Richard, if your on 1/8 microstepping now your steps per will be 32,000 now, not 40,000.
