Title: Linear Encoders
Post by: cowpoke on February 04, 2007, 09:55:30 PM
Can someone provide a discussion as to the pros and cons of using linear rather than rotary encoders on a machine which will be using Mach?
I have an Italian machine which already has glass scale encoders and servos and would like to make use of them rather than having to special mount rotary encoders.
TIA.

Hi, CEM

Rotary encoders are mostly on the servo, no backlash, liner encoders can cause the servo to hunt back and forth depending on your

backlash between table/encoder and servo.

You'll find them used both ways.

Hope this Helps, Chip

I opted to mount the encoders  directly to my ball screws.  I have 3:1 timing pulllys between servos and ballscrews. Appart from  some slight singing of the motors every thing works fine.
