Hi surf,
Check all mechanical linkages, loose wiring, then if you still have the same problem, it is probably that you have steppers tuned to fast.
Retest by cutting air, and start 1/2 the speed that you are set at now, and gradually increase the max speed until
the motors miss a step, then back the max down 20% and you should be about where the motors can run safely without fear of missing any steps.
Every one wants the fastest speed they can get from a stepper, but that speed isn't really the most reliable speed.
I would like to hear how things turn out for you.

more info

two things
1. 5v power supply to drive
I have the ground attached to the chassis and power to drive pul+ and dir+
If I disconnect the - from the 5v the stepper starts moving slow

2. Power ground to the chassis

Question, if the neg- on 5v the same as chassis ground??

No need to to post the same problem twice.  The info below is from your other post which will be deleted.

I'm trying to cut a part and my Y axis is constantly losing position. This is driving me nuts!!

What is causing this???

under the hood:

Keling Nema 34 1200oz, Drive KL-9082, Apollo I Breakout Board V1.0 (MachMotion)

Am I missing some setting?

Sorry, I don't understand what your saying.
Are you saying that you have the machine axis  constantly moving back and forth 60" and after 2-5 minutes the axis on returning to zero
is off?
