i have v18 & v23 and i am really not to happy with the product. i dont do fancy machining but it is a lot of editing in the moves. just yesterday i was doing some text work and i found many lines where the z was not coming up for the next letter. what a mess. just waiting for some cash to come in to get some other cad-cam software with not so much of a learning curve.  tom

Rich,

I am not sure why there are so many negative comments about the BobCAD CAM software.  My guess is a lot of the comments are about salesman, and our older software.  I can tell you that over the years our company and grown in many ways. The bottom line is the V24 software is an awesome program and can produce great parts.

Post processors are very important, and if the mach users settings don't match the post then their can be some real problems.   But like I offered before, anyone that needs a good mach post just let me know and I'll email you one.

Al

The BobART software is an add on for BobCAD CAM.  By adding the BobART  it gives you options to work with image files like PDF, AI, ESP.  You can also work with raster images like,  BMP, PNG, JPEG, GIF, TIF and many more.

So how do use use this.  It's simple bring an image in, trace it emboss it and machine it.

Step 1 :  Load an image file

There are 2 options for loading an image file.

RT Click on the BobART Manager

(http://s14.postimage.org/rca51lk3l/Load_Vector_files.png) (http://postimage.org/)
img upload (http://postimage.org/)

Or

RT Click on Images

(http://s8.postimage.org/tqv614gph/Load_image.png) (http://postimage.org/)
upload photo (http://postimage.org/)

Step 2: Trace the image

At this point you have 2 options,  you can vectorize the image or trace over it.

The result we are looking for is a wire frame out line of the part we want to emboss.

In other words we want to go from this:

(http://s13.postimage.org/aktvg5ssn/Star_Fish_white_B.png) (http://postimage.org/)
free image hosting (http://postimage.org/)

To This

(http://s7.postimage.org/mhp30jx6z/Black_star_fish.png) (http://postimage.org/)
photo hosting (http://postimage.org/)

How is this done?  Well it's really simple!  Use this video link to learn more.

http://screencast.com/t/RZbP6YBKrl4w (http://screencast.com/t/RZbP6YBKrl4w)

Step 3: Emboss it

Now that we have the traced image we want to emboss it, or give it thickness and depth.  This is done using the emboss model features in BobART.  You can take closed chains ( what we created when tracing the image) and emboss them.  There are many options for embossing.

(http://s10.postimage.org/b9299sdxl/emboss_option.png) (http://postimage.org/)
upload photo (http://postimage.org/)

(http://s14.postimage.org/s1gze8c8x/EM_Black.png) (http://postimage.org/)
upload pictures (http://postimage.org/)

Step 4: Machine it

This would be your final step, cutting the part.  What you are looking to do is create tool path for the embossed model.

The result would look like this

Title: BobCAD CAM V25 4 Axis Standard
Post by: aldepoalo on September 20, 2012, 06:07:10 PM
Many BobCAD CAM clients that run a 4 axis have requested to work directly with Solids or STL files. In the past we only offered 4 axis indexing and wrapping so working with solids was just not a reality.    BobCAD's V25 4 axis standard now offers 4 axis rotary tool path based off of solids.

So let's say you have a 3D solid that looks like this:

(http://s16.postimage.org/ni4bwtks5/4_axis_leg_solid.png) (http://postimage.org/)
upload photo (http://postimage.org/)

Using the 4 Axis Rotary tool paths you have the option to cut along or around the model.  You can cut with a Zig, Zig Zag or spiral pattern

(http://s12.postimage.org/bxpt0ijrx/4_Axis_Rotary_Patterns.png) (http://postimage.org/)
picture hosting (http://postimage.org/)

The cut model ends up looking like this:

(http://s14.postimage.org/s7gkrmzap/4th_axis_leg.png) (http://postimage.org/)
photo hosting (http://postimage.org/)

Watch this video to learn more about the work flow:   http://screencast.com/t/vuDyI3DAbQYL (http://"http://screencast.com/t/vuDyI3DAbQYL")

We have also added a Tool Path Pattern feature.  What this allows you to do is create 1 tool path feature or a series of tool path features and make an array or rotation or translation of those tool paths. This is a very useful feature all around, but when it comes to 4 axis is saves huge amounts of time.

Watch this video to learn more about the workflow:

I see alot of fancy pictures and neat parts, however, I tried to register for the demo, never got a link to the demo software.
I found a link to some software, looks right, but I notice files are missing when I tried to follow the Bobcad V25 manual.
Went to download post-processors, the webpage wouldn't let me choose a version of Bobcad.

So far, I am only slightly more impressed with Bobcad than Visual Mill.  Visual Mill's demo with FreeMill crashed my VMWare when I loaded an autocad drawing.

I would love to believe in Bobcad, but unless I can see a demo that isn't missing files, can take a basic autocad file with a block with a couple of holes and turn that into G-Code,
I'll never spend money on it.

OK.   I am getting a little annoyed with BobCad.  I just purchased a copy of V24 and I am trying to make a 2D drawing. The part is symetrical.  It is a mirror image of the left side to the right side.  I am having almost no luck copying and pasting holes and slots from one side of the drawing to the other.  I will admit this is new to me.

What I want to do is copy and paste from one part of the drawing to another.  I can get the software to copy and paste to a new instance but not to itself.  This should be simple but I cannot get there from here.  Can you show me how?  Can I send you a copy?

Thanks

Henry Staub

Sorry to hear that.  Those guys never sent me a link to there demo.

Good thing though.  I downloaded a demo of AutoDesk Inventor LT, and a demo of SolidCAM's InventorCAM that integrates with Inventor LT.
I was able to create 3D shapes, and then use InventorCAM to profile, pocket, drill, etc.

With the default machine type I exported the GCode to Mach3, did a find/replace for  :  to  O, because they used colons for the subroutines, and it ran in Mach 3.

This was the only demo product that actually worked for me.  30 day demo for both products, so you can create a bunch a G-code to see if it works for you.

I am not sure why you are having an issue with the mirror or copy and past feature.  If you would like to call me I can do a quick demo on the software and sort things out for you.

Here is a link for our help files that talks about the mirror feature and how it works:   http://www.bobcad.com/components/webhelp/BobCADCAMV25/en/CAD/Utilities/Mirror_%28Utilities%29.htm (http://www.bobcad.com/components/webhelp/BobCADCAMV25/en/CAD/Utilities/Mirror_%28Utilities%29.htm)

Title: Happy BobCAD CAM Customers:
Post by: aldepoalo on February 04, 2013, 08:26:13 AM
1. “We use BobCAD to design and machine guitar parts. It is especially useful for the more complex parts such as necks and bridges. We are a small shop, 2 people, and BobCAD gives us a 3rd hardworking employee – our trusty cnc machine. The training we received at the seminar in Dallas really gave us a jump start in the use of BobCAD.” -Chris Jenkins, Lame Horse Instruments, Mansfield, TX

2.“We make the best gas engines for giant same model aircraft with BobCAD, and we wouldn’t change it for anything! BobCAD allows us to create beautiful parts fast and efficiently, and their customer support is second to none. BobCAD for us has been the difference between having to contract CAM services and being able to create our parts by ourselves.” -Mateo Saraga, SE Model Products, Miami, FL

3. “I use BobCAD at my shop to make knee and hip implant tooling that doctors and surgeons use every day. From multiple part assemblies to single 3D parts, BobCAD gives me the affordable flexibility to get parts from design to cutting in no time. Whether I get a file from a customer or I draw it myself, the CAM interface makes it easy to get my tools applied, program into the machine control, and get going!” -Jim Blinkenberg, Cameron Park, CA

4. “We use BobCAD V25 on our Amada Laser. We design and nest using BobCAD to get the most out of our machine. We have also started using BobCAD on our Flow Waterjet and are having great results. BobCAD has been a great tool and the new features on V25 are working flawlessly. The best thing about BobCAD is the ability to import files from our other software and use the utilities drop down menu to connect the lines and arcs to make a complete part with ease.” -Doug Parks, N-FAB, Houston, TX

5. “I use BobCAD in my shop to create signs, letter cutouts, engravings, shelf parts, picture frame parts, decorations, really anything I or my customers can imagine. We have used V24 for a year now and we have barely tapped its capabilities. This software has made life so much easier. I have had a great time learning to use v24. I bought a 24” by 60” cnc router and the V24 software with no prior cnc or CAD/CAM experience and thanks to BobCAD, we were able to produce useable parts the first day we turned the machine on. I have never had any problems with the software other than what comes from my lack of experience. It does a lot of the work by itself. I was concerned at first with the price, but it really has paid for itself in time saved within the first year. And we are just a small business. BobCAD has definitely increased our sales and profitability. I plan to begin working with V24 to make an electric guitar. This used to seem impossible, but now it’s definitely do-able. Thanks to BobCAD V24. Soon I would like to upgrade to V25.” -Phillip Lucas, Philz Woodwerks, Phil Campbell, AL

6. “We are building a 74ft steel sailboat in our front yard and in our little home shop; we have a 5 x 9 CNC plasma/router table. We’ve used BobCAD for making multiple parts and tools, but the best project so far has been making a propeller blade pattern we used to cast our one propellers. We also cut multiple models of the hull, but now that the hull is taking shape, we are really enjoying making functional parts that are also decorative.  We recently designed and cut 54 – 1/4″ steel, mermaid deck braces.” -Doug Jackson, Tulsa, OK

7. “I use BobCAD-CAM to design small engine parts for the kart racing industry. Using BobCAD makes it very easy for me to generate the machine code right from the drawing without having to use a separate software program.  I find the CAD very easy to use now that I have become more familiar with it.  I have also used the BobART module it to generate drawings and code from scanned items saving a lot of time by not having to actually make the drawing.” -Tim Taylor, Track Trends, New Hudson, MI

8. “BobCAD is the most useful tool in my work shop. I’m developing a stringed musical instrument business that used to wreck my hands and limit my ability to play. With BobCAM and its ease to use, I can cut parts in 15% of the time it used to take me to hand make them. I’ve used Pro E but BobCAM is far easier to use. After only 3 weeks with the great tutorials I was able to cut my first Mandolin neck. I’m now onto my own design of upright electric basses, designing the backs, tops, necks and all the other blocks to build this bass. BobCAM will definitely send me into full time building in the next few months.” -Douglas Kemp, Douglas Strings, North Ridgenille, OH

9. “Although my main use for BobCAD is hobby related, I also use it in my business. I design engrave and V-Carve plastic signs for Photo voltaic installations to indicate the presence of solar power, identify  shutoff switches and maps of the installation to assist emergency responders such as firefighters to ensure all power is turned off. I have designed and machined parts for a middle school under water l robotics team, which helped them win their regional competition and place 11th in the world competition. My hobby related uses have been to design and fabricate aluminum router mounts for my home built CNC machine, machine parts for the addition of a fourth axis, fabricate wood parts for gifts such as a rotating ear ring, necklace stand and jewelry boxes, and to make several commemorative plaques out of Koa for my wife to give out at her family reunion.” -Chip Conklin, Chips Marine LLC, Kailua Kona, HI

10. “I design molds from start to finish for the integrated circuit industry. Our parts are very small so it’s an art in itself. I also make a vast type of I.C. test sockets. I like the mat. setups for the fact that I cut a vast type of materials, plastics, tool steels, etc. I’m getting really good with the BobArt PRO. It’s so cool and it shocks my friends as to how I can be so good at art. I don’t tell them how easy you all have made it. If I can, in the years to come, do nothing but art work and program from my home that is my goal with BobCAD-CAM software… So far so good. I have 4 seats of the software for myself. I am also teaching my son to program. That is a gift I can give him for his future. I can’t even tell you how much BobCAD has helped me in the shop. Thank you all, I love it.” -Steve Eckhoff, Precision Contacts, Fair Oaks, CA

11. “I use BobCAD to create one-off car and motorcycle parts on my Hurco BMC 4020. The ideas for the parts either come from existing pieces or from friends with ideas.  From simple parts to complex 3d shapes, BobCAD allows me to create this in less time and effort. What an awesome product for the money. Go BobCAD team!” -Henry Kenuam, St Louis, MO

12. “We use it [BobCAD-CAM software] to design/build parts for antique cars and tractors. We also use it to develop art works and designs for an NC plasma cutter. Main use is components for marine and automotive use manufactured on our Haas Mill. We also use it to design/manufacture model R/C car and airplane components. We have used it to design and produce a Company logo on a 3 ft x 3 ft office type sign.” -Tom Weber, Toms Marine, Ft McMurray, Alberta

Recently I took a class on BobCad V25 with Sorin, (the guy with a accent :). He showed us how to delete some icons and move others where they would be more handy like he has his in the "Wagon Wheel" tutorial. I forgot how to do this.

Go to Preferences> Customize

From here you can drag icons off tool bars or pick commands to add to tool bars.

This V25 is messed up in my computer. It will run good in the simulation but not in Mach3, 4th axis only. Also the top menu bar with File, Edit, and all the stuff on that line + help is gone now I can't even use the help, maybe I wore it out. Can you help me? I can not afford the the 1 year thing with support from BobCad.
Thank you Jerry Honkanen

It sounds like you have 2 issues going on.

1)  Install problems, did you install a full version or just register the demo copy.  The other issue might be your computer specs.

2)  Post processors,  you may not be running the correct post, or have your machine definition setup correct.

The help system we use is on line, so you can access it from anywhere....

http://www.bobcad.com/components/webhelp/BobCADCAMV25/en/BobCADCAM_V25_Help_System.htm#Introduction_and_Setup/Introduction.htm (http://www.bobcad.com/components/webhelp/BobCADCAMV25/en/BobCADCAM_V25_Help_System.htm#Introduction_and_Setup/Introduction.htm)

Please call me so I can email you a new install and talk about your options.

Ok i have the software,V25Pro and V24pro mill with lathe and nesting, i am going to give you a try ,i need a post for MACH 3 lathe i was referred to you and this thread from another member of the Mach support forum .
I need it in inches with diameter mode ,i could not find a post to work that came from Bobcad the closest i could come up with was the standard Fanuc lathe post but it still will not work.
I have recently converted my 12x36 lathe to cnc with servos and need to get it going the only way i can use it now is with the Mach wizards.

Thank You

I'm having trouble with simulation not representing what is machined. I've been dealing with tech support and have been told that the program is operating correctly. Maybe I am expecting too much from this program, but it seems to make sense that the simulation should show the actual tool path that the CNC runs. I was told that the lower right fillet had bad geometry which created the G-code error. And, that if I want to verify the G-code I need to buy more software.

I don't mind there being geometry problems as long as I know about them first. And why would only one of the fillets have a problem?

I would appreciate any advice, input or experience with this.

I am running V25 build #895.

The fillets were created using the fillet tool in Solid Works.

I opened the part in BobCAD and extracted the geometry, then projected the profile to a plane.

Here is the toolpath and toolpath geometry.

Here is the simulation. It looks good here so I ran the part.

This is what was machined.

The pictures above show the rough operation. The cleanup did the same thing. Here is the cleanup G-code problem:
N892 G02 X8.44 Y-2.7996 I-.125 J0. <- this line makes the extra cutout. This should not be here.
N894 X8.1181 Y-3.1198 I-.3219 J.0016 <- this is the correct fillet

I would want to look at the part file.  It looks like it could be an issue with the geometry.

That's what tech support said too. Which is fine. But, it should have shown up in the simulation run. Had I seen it there, I would have fixed it (which I eventually did and re-ran the part) and just moved on to the next setups.
Tech support has the file, ticket #NGZ-748-88752

DISCLAIMER: I feel that I went as far with tech support as possible and wanted to get some users experience. I've had a lot of success with BobCAD and am not trying to talk bad about the program.

It turned out that there was an extra line of code being created because of a bad tangential relationship between the radii and the straight line. The simulator and several back plot programs didn't have a problem with that extra line and ran the profile correctly. For some reason my machine had an issue with that extra line and instead of making a the tiny little move it ran a circle. I wasn't able to determine how the bad relationship was created.

In BobCAD I used the "Make Arcs Tangential" feature and set the minimum tolerance to .0001". After re-posting, the extra line of code was gone. I just need to remember to do that on parts from now on.

I'm using V23.
All I want to do is machine a hemisphere at the bottom of a parallel bore. Just to clarify, it's actually combustion chambers in a cylinder head. There's a 70mm dia bore x 6mm deep with a partial hemisphere at the bottom giving a total depth of 28mm. I can model it and I can generate tool paths. What I can't do is get the same amount of step over all along the profile. I'm using a 12mm ball endmill. If I choose a step down of say 0.4mm the finish is perfect near the top of the rad but as the rad gets shallower the 0.4 step down puts the next cut too far along the profile. What I want is a constant stepover along the whole profile. I've tried a spiral path but it makes a mess of the vertical sides of the bore.
Any ideas?

Post a IGES model of the part so we can see just what you are trying to make.

Just started to learn BobCad V25. I come from a mastercam back ground and so far I'm impressed with the product given the price. One thing I'm having trouble with is when I import a file (STEP, Sat) It won't let me select any entities to create a tool path. It just highlights the whole solid. Do I need to import it a different way or is it a problem with the way our CAD guy is exporting it.

One of the first things I do when I import a part is create a new layer called 'Lines'. In that layer I extract all from solid (It might be extract all edges or something like that).

If there is a specific profile that I am working on, I will create a layer named after whatever profile that I am working on. Then in that layer I create a plane somewhere in space above or below the part (wherever it makes sense), then I extract the specific lines of the profile to that plan. That feature is in Other -> Extract to Plane (or something similar).

I wrote this form memory so hopefully I got the names of the features correct.

I hope this helps!

I have never got Predator to load for Mach 3/ The template options don't have mach 3 like bobCad does. I called in and of course every one is busy and will call me back. . . (2 weeks ago ) I like many think You people could convert 75% of the sales staf to tecks and maybe get something done.
I have BobCad V25 and licenced Mach 3 also

Hi Al, I use Bob CAD CAM for 3axis and 2 Axis Lathe on Mach3 I am very impressed with the ability to modify the post processor to tweak the Mach3 Turn G-Code and have now produced a new Mach 3 Turn Post processor that works perfectly on my newly converted CNC Sieg SC2 Lathe.  I have never needed the technical support as I find the application very easy to use once you have your head engaged with the way it works. By the way, in the last 3 years of using V24 I have only had 2 phone calls in relation to sales. Personally I do not find that intrusive or a problem. 8)
