Title: Operating a punch machine via Mach3
Post by: WimBun on February 20, 2012, 05:37:48 AM
I recently bought a CNC punch/nibble machine (Swedisch Pullmax P 210 dcm) The machine is 25 years old and is controlled by a TRS80 like homecomputer with Z80A processor. Working: The(steady)  tool of the machine punches little holes and by moving the table it can cut out figures out of sheetmetal or aluminium.  I would like to replace the Z80A computer by a Mach3 solution. I don’t see many problems by taking over the control over the X and Y axes.  But the punching tool is another issue. My question is: Is this done before and how do I control the punching movement?  I read in a manual about PWM Motor Control but I am not sure if this is a solution.

How is the punch controlled?

Hood,

I don't know (yet). The machine arrives in a few weeks time. I have a wiring diagram that shows de X and Y axes. The are operated bij stepper motors with a choppermechanism to reduce the current. The punch is simple, you have to change the tools by hand. The only thing it does is move down and up. From once to 100 times or more/minute.

Do you know if there are different kinds of motorsolutions for the punch head and how does that influence the software?

Dont know anything about punches but when you get it and find out how it works then maybe a solution can be found.

The last Pullmax I saw has an air punch.  Worked kind of like a planishing hammer.  They were using it to form louvers.
