I've seen a few posts about finish passes not being in diameter mode, but no answers. I'm using an older Denford Microturn lathe that's in diameter mode. No answers about how to switch it to radius mode. Easyturn would be a great solution for my classroom, but can only get diameter mode to work with rough pass- not the finish pass. I could have the kids double the X coords in the code, but students would miss a number here or there. It would be great to know if anyone has had success generating both passes in diameter mode.
Thanks much,
Jim

I am not aware of such a problem.
You can change from diameter to radius mode in both Lazyturn and Mach3 turn.
Your mode should be the same from the DFX, to Lazyturn setup, to export of the code into Mach3 turn.
I would suggest you have a read of the Lazyturn Manual which can be found in Members Docs.
Post your dxf file which is drawn based on diameter.

Thanks for the reply Rich,
It's good to know that it should work. I've followed the manual for generating DXF files (except I've used an AutoCAD 2004 ACSII dxf since is seems to work well for all models I've tried). I must have overlooked where the DXF can be saved in diameter mode. I thought it was just a profile, saved with the origin at 0,0 from my AutoCAD or ProgeCAD program, the taken into Lazyturn.
I will look into the manual more.
I don't have a problem with the rough pass- that comes out in diameter mode. The final pass will always generate in radius mode.

Hope you're still watching this Forum Rich,
I've resaved my dxf file. For some reason, I can't export as a binary v 12 dxf that Lazyturn likes, but it likes a v12 ascii dxf. Same results as saving it as a 2004 file. I've attached that file. Following the instructions in the manual, I don't see any options while saving the dxf file about diameter mode.. just a drawing file. When I open it in Lazyturn, I have it set to diameter mode in the options pull down. Select my tool and generate the rough pass, then generating the fine pass. The diameter mode is never de-selected. When looking at the posted code, The rough pass is in diameter settings and the fine pass is in radius settings (need to be doubled). What am I missing? If I could switch my lathe to radius mode, this wouldn't be a problem- just do everything as a radius. The problem is that Denford doesn't support the older machines and the forums haven't helped. Love to get Lazyturn working. I know I could always have the kids go through and double the Xs on the second pass, but that could be a disaster with some of their math skills :-)
I've attached my DXF and here's the generated code. It is a 1" diameter dowel used for a rocket noecone.- Thanks

Hi Jim, I'm certain RICH will get back to ya.
In the mean time, all looks good here with your DXF, perfect.
I am also in DIA mode, Mach and LT.
Everything comes out fine here.
Russ
-
also, I get a different output from LT, mine is on the right.
Wondering if you are running thae latest version.
-
Thanks for the reply overload- I downloaded it 2 weeks ago. Not using Mach- Just lazyturn. Then taking it to our old dos version of Microturn 2.12. Tried on several computers- XP and Windows 7. No difference.
-
Using the file you posted I had no problem generating code from Lazyturn in diameter mode.
See Pic DIAMETER MODE_HCIR1
Then I ran the gcode file in MacH3 Turn. ( had to edit a few lines because of more than one line number on the same line )
See Pic DIAMETER MODE_HCIR2
Then I backplotted the gcode and copied your drawing to compare the code to the pathing form LazyTurn.
See pic ACAD DXF OVERLAY TO CODE
don't see any options while saving the dxf file about diameter mode
Missunderstanding .....draw your full size full size and just save as a version 12 DXF.
( What i meant was ,some follks for whatever reason will draw half size, then use the diameter / radius option to enlarge it,
and then who knows what mode they are in in Mach3 Turn...you just don't do goofy stuff like that)
The rough pass is in diameter settings and the fine pass is in radius settings (need to be doubled).
I have never seen that and need to fool around to see what you did to accomplish it! ;)
See pic DOUBLE ACAD DXF OVERLAY TO CODE
The problem is that Denford doesn't support the older machines ???
I don't know what you mean .....

Overload- Where did you get your release? You're showing a definite different release. My code never has the line stating diameter mode and being an alpha may be the problem (I hope). I downloaded it from here: http://www.machsupport.com/downloads.php
LazyCam 3.01. Just tried to download it again and it's definiely alpha, not final. Here's my help splash screen attached.
There really aren't a whole lot of setting I could have messed up ( a real positive for high school students), but I'm sure I could have done something. I saw 2 other postings in these forums where this problem was mentioned, but didn't really see any replies to them. I'm wondering if it's an alpha thing.
-
Rich,
Thanks for testing my file. Everything looks as yours does on my screen. The bars show diameter mode and when I simulate the paths, they look great. Tool runs as it should. When I post the code, what you see is what it gives me. I need to change the first few tool lines on each path so it runs on my lathe and it makes great rough passes, but I need to hit the escape key for the finish pass or it does what your cad overlay shows... a chunk of wood flying out of the chuck :)
-
I think this is the last one I used ... not sure though, try it.
Russ

http://www.machsupport.com/forum/index.php/topic,5767.msg95122.html#msg95122
From the manual, version to download.
-
Got the one from your last post and it generates the code perfectly! Didn't change a thing and it worked so it must be that alpha version. I'll try running it on the lathe when I get to school this morning and post my results.
Looks promising- Thanks!
-
That's great Jim !
Hope all is well now, will check back later today to see.
Might be the wrong version with LC on that downloads page ? ? RICH, can you verify ? ?
Regards,
Russ

Just a last shout out- I want to thank you gentlemen for all the help. It was definitely the alpha version issue. Ran 5 different nosecone shapes and a complex chess pawn without a single error today. Parts turn so nice on a dowel rod that they don't even need sanding! ( i will give some of that credit to my nicely ground and honed tool :-)
All I have needed to do is delete a few lines at the start of each path dealing with tools and insert a few lines of my own. Pretty simple.
Now I'm looking at Mach3 as a possible upgrade to my old DOS microturn 2.12 driver software.
Thanks again!

:)
That's great news Jim !
Always anxious to see pics of LT produced turnings, yours sound really nice.
Please post some if you can.
Also, you can enter whatever you like in the Code Prolog box before generating the code, might save some editing.
Thanks,
Russ

Russ,
I'll see what can be done so a user can download what is required for a stand alone installation of LazyTurn.
I am not sure what additional files are required and after downloading the latest LC & LT version I had to copy a dll file into the directory to get LT to work.
Should be no problem if one installs Mach3.
