Title: Where to put it?
Post by: stringkilla on January 29, 2006, 12:04:09 PM
Is there any optimal position for a router body on a Z carriage? I mean does the Z travel, mine is 3.00", have a determining factor to where it is mounted on the Z axis? Sort of top dead to bottom dead travel?

I have my router mount adjustable. This can accomodate longer tools if needed.... moving the mount upward.  Or if doing intricacies on flat surfaces with short tools, moving the mount down to minimize introduced flex caused by extended rails.  And then a middle postion for general use if desired.
It  depends on what pieces you will be cutting most often.
I want to be doing sculptural pieces too, so mounting the router up high allows more movement with longer tools(bits).

P.S.  Actually, I have two adjustments... 1. where the router body slides up and down in the brackets, and 2. The bracket itself can be remounted in alternate holes on the Z mounting plate.
