Title: vacuum pump
Post by: gjmoule on March 29, 2011, 12:30:26 AM
Hi , has anyone had any joy converting a compressor to a vacuum pump? I have a vacuum table which works great when hooked up to a normal vacuum cleaner yet when I hook it up to a 2cfm vacuum pump the holding power is very poor. So perhaps a converted compressor is the way to go. thanks

This is an old thread but it describes what I did to convert a compressor to vacuum,

Hey Greg, that's nifty for sure !
Is it still holding up ?
how many hours of operation have you gotten out of it ... roughly ?
And, where do you get that soft spongy O-Ring material ?

gjmoule, hope you don't mind the inquiry, very interesting.
Thanks,
Russ

Yes it still goes.  But I don't use it much.

It is just as noisy as when it was a compressor.  I have close neighbours and noise is an issue for me.

So I bought a refrigeration mechanics vacuum pump which is very quiet.

If noise was not a problem it would still be used constantly.

The rubber I bought from a local engineering supplies.  Nothing special.  1/4" dia sponge rubber. (not foam rubber)
