Title: Thrown together coil winder ;)
Post by: Hood on March 05, 2011, 11:19:18 AM
Have a big Aluminium welding job on at the moment and ran out of wire and the local stockists didnt have any of the 100mm dia rolls that I use in the spool on gun. I bought a big roll and started winding it onto the small rolls on my Triumph lathe but it gets boring and results are crap. Decided I could make up a couple of brackets for the front  turret in the Computurn  lathe and use my small winders screen and set up a new profile.
This is the result, its rough and not perfect winding but it will get me out of a scrape and with a bit of tweaking it will work well. :) Add to that the fact I get 20 wee rolls out of one big one, the big roll costs £47 the wee ones £7, so quite a saving if I dont have to constantly watch over it (dont tell my customers though ;D )

Ha ha nope, got the idea from needing the wire on the small spools for the migs spool on gun, and only being able to get a large spool :)
Alu mig  welding is a PITA if you have to feed the wire over a long distance and even a 3m torch can be a pain if you are twisting and kinking it. The spool on gun means I can get 10m away from the wire feed unit but the wire still only has to feed about 150mm  :)

Hood,

I have not seen the spool on gun before, looks like a brilliant tool.
Do you have to have a special drive unit / power unit to supply the power for the wire drive motor in the gun ?

There are several variants of spool on guns, my previous one required that I fit a PCB inside the wire feed unit but I now have one that has an inline control box so only requires a standard Euro torch connection on the wire feed unit. That means I can swap from machine to machine without having to mess around wiring in a PCB.
Here is a link to the one I have, although I never got from that supplier, its just they have a pic of it.

and in the pic attached I have arrowed the control box.

Well I dont drink but this bloody wind and trying to weld Alu is close to making me contemplate seeing if it can dispense alcohol but think it will be something stronger than beer :(

Funny you should mention fire, just sh$t myself 10 mins ago as I forgot it was alarm test day and I was just coming in the door when it was switched on, cant be certain but I think they maybe were watching me on the security camera  and waiting for me to come in ;D

Heres a pic of it without the coil fitted, need to make up a friction pade so the big roll is under tension and the front part will have to make up a PTFE nozzle as the copper contact tip it heating up and grabbing and shaving the wire at any faster than 400rpm. Also thinking of making a pressure flap that sits on the small coil so the wire is held on the coil as it gets wound as it may help stop it wanting to jump as it reaches the end.
