Title: Drill Wizard for Turn
Post by: DaOne on November 17, 2010, 05:58:55 AM
I do quite a bit of quick one off stuff on the lathe that wizards work great for. Drilling stock is one of them. Since there was no wizard that I was aware of I decided to create one so I didn't have to use MDI or create a program. I have a quick change tool post so I can hold drills with that so I can drill using the z axis for advanced things such as peck drilling, chip break or feed in/ out (reamer). Its not quite finished yet but hopefully soon. Here is a screen shot...

Nice, I'm sure many of the folks here could use that.

Thanks for posting-

Here you guys go...

Please use with caution!

If you find bugs please report them here.

Know issues...
Chip break doesn't work with Mach 3 due to unsupported G74 Cycle. I might do it long hand if I get time. If you have a better way. Please let me know.

Looks like G85 (Feed In/ Feed Out) don't work as well. Looks like I will have to do that one long hand as well. :(

Everything should be working other than the chip break cycle. Please use this version as a few bugs were corrected with clearance.

If you download it please let me know if you find any issues or see a need for something added.

Thanks,
Wes

I'll give the thread some time and if all works well I will put the files in the download section
Mach Tool Box.
Thanks,
RICH

Still needs the chip break working. Since Mach doesn't support it. The only way i know to do it is long hand. Feed, dwell, feed.... rapid out.

Ok Rich... This one should be ready to go. Unfortunately I wont be able to test in on my lathe for a few days. Hoping some of you guys can give it a workout for me. Everything should be working correctly however use with caution until its fully tested.

Wes,
If I  get some free time this weekend I'll try it out and give you feed back.
Hopefully there will some others folks who will try it.

Looks good .
Have the panel off my lathe at the moment, once I get the new one wired and rewrite the ladder  I will give it a test.

Where's Dave PHIL ???
This one would be a good addition to the flyout screen in your lathe screen along with all the other wizards.

Well I was able to break away and give this a run on my lathe. Everything works as it should. :) I am however disappointed that peck drilling doesn't rapid back in and feed from the last point.  Anyone know if we can create our own canned cycles? I want the correct G-code not a new M-code. I didn't wanna rewrite a post to make this work from within my cam program. Also, what lathe screen are you guys using? I have been slowly reworking the stock 1024 screen to suit my needs. Very plain and lacking. been toying with the idea of creating one that mimics my Haas TL-1. All wizards right at your fingertips.  Love to see what others have done.

I redid the peck drilling code to make it how it should be. Now it will correctly drill to peck depth, rapid back to z start, rapid back to .0005 away from the last peck depth then feed to the next peck increment. I couldn't stand the slow feed back into the hole. Takes way too long. Let me know what you guys think.

I dont think I had an issue with peck drilling on the lathe before, if you look at this vid about 1min 20 secs in is that what it should do? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ced7Ei2F7I

Edit
Ok forget that, just looked at the code and it was written long hand.

Sorry, was looking at the wrong code ::) it was indeed a G83 cycle being used in that vid and seemed to me to work fine. Code was G83X0Z-122Q10.0F0.2
Will have to run the file once I get the panel wired just to make sure.

Afraid I have not had a chance to mess much with the macros but did test the pecking  and it worked fine.

Hood, what did you test? My wizard or your code you already had that you said worked fine? If it was the wizard... what version did you use? I tried the G83 canned cycle and it rapids out and feeds all the way back in. It doesn't rapid to just before the last peck and then feed the next peck. I have used the 1.3 version and it does exactly as I need. Its much faster as long as your drill bit is lined up correctly. :) It works just like my Haas lathe. Is there a plug-in that will let me write my own G-Code macros? I think I remember reading poppabear was working on something of the sort but I am unable to locate the post.

It was the version you posted in post 13.
Normally I just use the macro in Mach itself but tried this out today. Didnt actually drill anything as I was testing a new version of Mach at the time and didnt want to risk my U Drill ;D

Dont know about the plugin I am afraid, maybe best to email Scott and see.

Here is a new lathe screen I am working on because I wanted a cleaner look. More options and more unified layout. It will include all the wizard that are out the without pulling up the wizard menu. I will also be adding a few more such as a multistart threading wizard that I have been working on. I do allot of programming on Haas machines at my shop and play with the little guys at home to make things around the house and teach my 2 boys. I wanted to keep the look and feel of the Haas intuitive programing.  If you have never used one.. here is what it looks like.

Anyways, let me know what you think of the screen.

Haas way looks interesting but will have to read it a bit more.
Screen looks like it will be nice and clean :)
