Title: Can't remember anything! XYZ will not jog
Post by: scheek on October 19, 2010, 02:42:17 PM
Anybody, ???

Just tried to fire my old homemade CNC back up after three years to do a simple wood project.  In the meantime my hardrive died.  I was running Mach 2 because of the antiquated PC Pavilion I was using.  Got fixed and now I have lost my setting.

I am using the breakout board by Bob Campbell and downloaded the Sound logic XML file that I was using before.

I can hear the motors engage when I load a simple circle (dxf).  Green light engages fine and G-code uploaded.

My problem is that I can't jog any where.  I see circle but not movement on XYZ manually.
I'm not sure of the tuning either.  Default is 8000.  I think mine was much higher.  I am using a 10 TPI screw.  Can't remember crap.

I've got to have a setting wrong somewhere. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Scheek

Does code run and commands from MDI run? If so then sounds like Jog Control sounds like its switched off.

Yes, but very slow.  I can barely hear the Z coming down.  That 's why I know I have tuning wrong as well.

I switched on and off the jog control button on the front screen but that did not help.  Not sure, but I think the Green light has to be on to jog? correct?

Ok so you can do one of two things, first calculate the steps per unit manually or go to the Diagnostics page and use the auto set steps button, its right above reset.

Do you recall the manual way?  I have a .5 screw with a 10 TPI.  I could look back at how I did it before but to save time I'm asking.  I think it was either 4000 or 40000.  This is a pulse motor.

need to know if its steppers and if so what microstepping you have the drives set to. Also any gearing between motor and ballscrew.

Steppers.
NO gearing between motor and screw. 10 TPI
Microstepping?  Have to look after work.  I think that is written on motor.

Ok well your steppers are likely to be 200 steps per rev and it is the drives that will determine the microstepping, do you know what make they are? For example Gecko drives are fixed at 10 microsteps, other drives you can set 1/2 1/4 or 1/8.

Yes. that is right.  I remember now.  200 and Gecko.

ok so 200 step x 10 micro steps is 2000 steps per motor rev. 10TPI screw means 10 motor revs to move one inch so 2000 x 10 = 20,000 steps per unit.

Thanks.  That should really help!  Again, I remember this after you tell me.  I swear this was a learning curve to complete the first time around.  I, like many others, got in deep water and when completed swore I'd never change anything (configuration) on it.  Then the dang hardrive died.

I have put this off for 8 months, knowing I would have to relearn everything.  This bit has really helped.  I will try it again and see if she will move.

Thanks.

Once you get it running save your xml to another drive or a CD or something ;)

Jogs so slow.... tap.tap.tap. tap....  Also will not stop jogging in each direction.  Got to be the config somewhere.

Sounds like you may be in Step Jog mode, press Tab key on keyboard and make sure you are set to Constant.
If thats not it attach your xml and I will have a look.

Find 123Soundlogic.xml

Afraid that seems to be a blank xml as there are no motors enabled at all.

Where do you see that about the motors not being enabled? Interesting.

Something else is happening beyond that.  I have MACH2 on my cpu at work and when I upload the circle I can jog XY.  On the one at the CNC the XY will not jog on the screen. Same program, same soundilogic.

Thanks.

Is this Mach2 or Mach3 we are talking about? I thought it was Mach3 you were using? The xml for Mach2 will not work for Mach3.

Mach2 is what I was using.  Just now checked ram in this other cpu and it was only 198.  The orginal was 500.  That could be the problem .  The 500 was working fine.  I will check at lunch an see.

Okay.  using a better cpu now.  Everything cranked right up.  However, I have a problem with Z axis.  When I try to move it, it hits and then green light blinks.  I unhooked another motor (X) and ran cable to Z and it worked fine.

After light blinks I have to restart cpu to make it come back on and stay, then if I hit Z again it will do same thing.  If I bypass Z and hit XY, it does fine.  Must be in my powersuppy somewhere is all I can figure.

Any thoughts on this before I dig in it.  thanks
