Hey folks, I'm slowly ramping up my machine's axis. I built these models to test the 4th and 5th axis, and am sure I'll have to build a jig to get both sides of the shapes. However, how would you hold the stock in the jigs? I'm a little lost on that part.

Oh, I should say that the 4th and 5th axis are the B/C axis of the Doughty Drive B/C head. That said, let me know what you think and how you'd recommend making a jig for these puppies.

Perhaps a sprout on the top of the head (similar to Teletubbies) then cut it off once machining is complete ?

what cam package are you using?

I'm using RhinoCAM pro. Hmm, this might be even easier to do this with a rotary table axis. No jig required then. I'm going to try that, as I do have that waiting to be installed.

It depends on the size, material, tolerances, surface finish, any distortion during machining, Forces being produced, Chip issues, how you are processing them (inside & outside in the same setup?) and what the blank shape is.
Could create a plug and/or a nest (or a A/B load), might be able to use vacuum, or even a bladder, or tabs that get machined off after. Sometimes you can use Glue. Might even have to move clamping points during processing, production quantities, Lots of options with lots of issues to determine priority and direction to go in.

I'm going to make these in both aluminum and wood. My mill is not liquid cooled, so I'll be miling slowly. I haven't heard of using a vaccum, bladder, or glue. Those options are very interesting. I'll look up those to see how they willl apply here.
Question though, what is a 'nest'. That gives me a visual that is very different than is probably expecting;)
