Title: I'm in Hog Heaven
Post by: Ya-Nvr-No on June 20, 2010, 11:17:20 PM
Been learning to use Mach3 and my Router with some Logos I recreated. Now I am hooked on finding spalding maple, wavy patterns & curly burl. Every wood pile I pass I stop and ask if I can look for unique grain and knots. Meeting some real characters. I'm sure that's what they say about me too.  ;D

Dave, I'd noticed my error after I posted, but no way to modify a post in this forum.

Working with wild cherry this week. Smells great.

Love Cherry wood when it's cut! I also love mahagony but it kills my lungs  >:( Mask is mandatory on that stuff-

Keep up the nice work-

Still having fun, Love the Wild cherry Indian motorcycle sign, dam thing is heavy too, beautiful grain & color.
I don't think people understand how long it takes to create these things.
A .045" cutters take a lot of light passes to get to finial depth without breaking. Damn China ruined it for the artist/craftsman's trade. ;D
Cutting vinyl is so much more profitable!!!
But these will last a lifetime, or they just might make for a warm winter night if need be.
Good thing I give these things away. The beer always tastes better when someone says thanks.
Have a Happy and Safe 4th of July weekend.

My 4th of July project, Still wet with Boiled Linseed oil. Too bad the walnut split during the process of cutting.
Thought I'd try to come up with a presentation piece. So it's still a work in process.
Wasn't sure how the flag would look draped over the star, But for the most part it has possibilities.
4 Tools over 30 hours of cutting. Think I can cut the time down by 1/2 but not the tools used.

Post by: RICH on July 05, 2010, 12:28:12 PM
You probably know this already, but you can use a PEG solution to keep it from cracking / splitting.
Of course you would need to plan ahead.

I have a fair amount of walnut and don't let folks pick and choose. They just leave with a lousy foot of wood and i am stuck stacking
the 1000 board feet or they want the curly gun stock blanks for nothing....been there, done that, no more.....nothing personal my friend
but i know where your coming from.

Nice work...post more

BTW, you can ge the curly maple feathers effect by wrapping / laying waxed dental floss and igniting it on the wood. Poor mans way to turn that maple into a muzzle loader stock which is deceptive relative to the wood used.

Thanks for the information, never heard of PEG.
I'm new to the wood working trade, spent my life in the metal removing profession. Smelling stinky coolant and oily rags. Last 20 Programming machining & turning centers with robot gantry loaders. Now I do contract work and controls engineering. Working on 9 new rocker arms for racing engines at the present. So the weekends and evenings are filled with cutting wood and learning to create 3d signage artwork. I'd love to get good at this. I can drink beer at this job. Want to learn to make Jewelry also. Nice to have skillful hobbies isn't it?

No one touches my wood pile. been collecting it for 20+ years. Recently I found a nice Amish saw mill owner that keeps some nice pieces off to the side for me. Now there's a real character. Boy does he collect crap. I'll have to get some photos of this guys shop. He's got shafts running thru walls with pulleys and belts running over doorways. An old Pratt & Whitney vertical mill with a B&S motor. Hand operated 20+ton overhead I beam steel crane.

Let me get this straight you lie waxed dental floss (not used I hope) and light it with a match and as it burns it creates a burl/feathery like pattern? I assume this is after you have sanded the stock and are ready for finishing? Got to try that one. Cool! That way I can layout the pattern where I feel it will best be seen.

Thanks again

Only new floss.  :) I wish i had some pictures to show you but all those guys have gone to muzzle loader heaven........
It's really tuff to find that piece of curly maple which would run right to the end of the barrell. When finished you would see light and dark areas from the wood grain and in absense of the grain the floss trick was neat...need to experiment to get the right affect, been years since i did that on a set of dualing pistols.

They have a PEG ( it's  different than the engine collant stuff ) and you let the wood sock in the stuff so it won't crack when drying.
Haven't used it in years ( i think Constantines out of New York sold it ( they have been out of buisness for a long time ) )

All this useless info stored in the cloud above my head....all it takes is the right posting for it to be remembered.

No i don't do wood working, concrete , roofs or siding anymore .......  just a comment before you even ask  ???

PEG: "polyethylene glycol":
"This medication is used to treat occasional constipation. It works by holding water in the stool to soften the stool and increases the number of bowel movements. It is known as an osmotic-type laxative."
That's Not my problem as of yet RICH,  :o

That looks like it is used for everything, sold by the local flimflam man I'd expect  ;D No wonder it made it to automobile use!!!

Pentacryl looks promising but kind of expensive

The Wrap for the totem pole is 60" x 13" x 6" Longest and thickest one I've done, HDF and painted
He wanted the metal pole that held the totem up covered.

I filled between with "Great Stuff" foam, protecting it with 24" wide waxed paper, so the foam would not stick to the HDF inside curve. Then wrapped it with straps till it expanded, conformed to the shape and cured, then removed it and machined the outside to suit. Photo shows the rough cut.

Using latex caulking to hold the wrap in place & to seal it. Again holding it with straps till cured. Fun project  ;D Even got to do some hand painting for effect.

Thanks

It's easy and fast to cut, can be repaired easily by cutting out the area and gluing (gorilla glue) in the new piece then re-machine. Relatively light and very durable, nothing soaks into it, you can paint it with anything, even house paint. Very stable, so it will not warp over time. Good for any weather. And the list goes on...

Look up Signfoam3, I use 18lb density 2" thick The cost is steep ($500 and about 97 lbs) but one board produces around 6 times or more in revenue. So you could say "I am lovin it". And it is safer than cutting some of the woods I do that can be harmful to my health.

Only other tools I use are a wood rasp and sand paper, the fastest way to get it ready for primer.
Well worth the cost for 3D sculpturing. Cuts fast, I rough at 70-150 inches per minute. When I get my next machine finished it will triple that speed.

Thanks Scott  ::) for fixing my screw up

Used to hold an Allen Bradley SLC 503 PLC (Programmable Logic Controller)
with 4 thermocouple module and  a 6 input/6 output Relay I/O module
Controls my Fireplace blower (when to come on and off based on temps in Plentem and the room)
Also Gives me the temps of four zones (Room, Basement, Outside, and the Plentem in the fireplace)
and controls one electrical outlet that I use to turn on and off a light I plug into it.

Programed it to come on in the early morning and again in the evening for a few hours.
Everything is programed and monitor from the Panelview 600 HMI (Human Machine Interface)
Even created some ladder logic to compute the day of the week. Fun little bit of programming!

Used Boiled Linseed Oil to finish the bamboo (called Plyboo) box, a very hard wood.
Added a little engraving.

Hidden cabinet door hinges at the bottom to get access to the PLC and wiring.
Beautiful wood to work with, finishes well on the face, sides and ends.
Project I been wanting to do for years.
Just got it hung up so have not finished installing the temp probes as of yet.

This is a type of engraving and/or forming of a copper alloy. Have you tried anything like this? I have been wanting to try casting the copper discs, they are traditionally cast in water. Pouring molten copper into a water bath sounds scary but I've seen it done and it works. It makes the copper very small grained and it engraves almost like gold. I don't plan on doing the engraving, I'm making the disc for a friend of mine.

Could you imagine doing something like this with a CNC?

Title: Re: I'm in Hog Heaven

It would have to be old pennies, pre 1982. Some of the alloys for this have a small amount of Silver or Gold in them. I'll try some with a little Tin first and see how it goes, I doubt if I ever try gold since it's gone through the roof. Although I do have several sheets of gold leaf, I don't think it's enough for the alloy. The gold/copper alloy is supposed to turn a jet black with oxidation. I think the silver is more of a brown color.

Well, I found out yesterday that I can't melt copper in my electric furnace. Probably isn't a good idea to melt brass in it. I got the copper up to 1800F and the elements broke. When I checked it and the whole element crumbled to little pieces. I'll rewire it and then keep it below 1250F for aluminum and pewter.
I'll have to get the propane furnace out and finish this melt.
I started a melt with 90% copper, 10% tin, and a small amount of copper/phos rod to alleviate gas issues. I had the water bath all set up, too. Maybe next week.

Pretty close, we were looking around the Cleveland area and Louden. We've kind of settled on western Chattanooga. I was checking into some Iron Foundries in the area but I've had some health problems so I think I'm on early retirement. More time for CNC and Casting, both kinds, casting metals and Lures. :)

Cleveland is a pretty nice place. Loudon is not that bad either. Loudon is much smaller than Cleveland, but fairly close to Knoxville. Cleveland is close to Chattanooga, but Cleveland is most likely large enough that you would never have to go to Chattanooga. If I had the option of picking a city to move to in Tennessee, Chattanooga would be darn near the bottom of the list. That is just my opinion. I have lived in TN for over 30 years, and just cringe when I have to go to Chattanooga. There ARE nice places surrounding Chattanooga, and most of those areas bring a premium price, but I believe the Knoxville area to be a far superior place to live. Better roads, easier travel, better laid out, nicer surroundings, better neighborhoods, better shopping, etc. Plenty of places to drop a lure, too! I work next door to a small iron casting facility. Got a couple houses to choose from too. ;D Couldn't interest you in an all brick, large yard, in-ground pool with surrounding concrete patio, small bar, hot tub, small pool house, concrete drive, 2 car attached garage, nice neighborhood, right outside city limits of Athens, could I?  ;D ;D How bout a VERY nice, newly restored, two story turn of the century house. **end of sales pitch**

Not trying to steer you away from Chatt, because it does have allot to offer some people. Some people would live no where else. Just figured I would give my opinion, even though you didn't ask. >:D

My fist jewelry piece, Made on my newest rack and pinion built machine (40" x 30" x 2" table)

I recently watched a new TV series called Revolution. There was a new prop introduced, a silver pendant. It caught my eye in that it looked like a perfect fit for ArtCam, Mach3 and my new interest the Lindsay Palm Engraver. Though I used Fortal Aluminum as the base material, polishes well but is a little gummy for engraving. Amazing that from an image, a recreation can be produced. Its not perfect but it was fun and taught me a lot.

Rich it is a sweet tool and fun to peel back metal. Always loved to carve and whittle. So I jumped in to learn a new skill. It is not a cheap endeavor because it takes a lot of additional items to do it well. Palm Engraving is so much cleaner then rotary engraving, just seems to capture the light well. I'm enjoying the process. The diamond rotary sharpening tool sure makes all my engravers, knives, drills, wood carving and hand tools super sharp with a very clean straight edge.  Find I don't use the pedestal grinder near as much.

Just out of curiosity, was it machined with a flat working plane or did you use a rotary attachment ?

Flat, have not had time to install my new built 4th and 5th axis servo driven Trunnion table as of yet. Looking forward to seeing the effects I can create with it. Thanks, I'm having fun. Hope to have my 4 axis Lathe done soon. One servo axis is moving under power. Working on the wiring for the others.

Did you flip the image to create the second side GCode or use the same GCode and just reverse the X axis within Mach3 ?

Tweakie you know, but others might not.

Reversing the X by setting X axis scale to -1 to mirror the profile for the second side.
That's why part 0,0,0 was the center, bottom face. Same thickness just mirrored in X axis

He showed it to everyone at the next gun show, so I'd say he was pleased.

Thanks again

Was so damn cold this past winter, I was catching up on some good ole TV off the net.
This logo caught my eye and using a screen capture made a new wall hanger/dust collector.
Just cut it out yesterday, so still have not finished it but it is 9" x 12" with a .27" relief.
Cut with a two flute 1/8" ball end mill, single pass. About 4 hours of cutting.
top is the screen capture, center is the 3D rendering and the last is the walnut cutout.
Would estimate about 3-4 hours of development/design time.

Had to get away from Lua coding for a few days.  :o

Neighbor was throwing out an old hutch that was in his barn, was missing the lower two glass panels and needed refinishing bad. But "if it's Free it's for Me" Then of course I had to make a stand to put it on and find a design that might give it a focal point. Internet search found an image that might work. Created a vector drawing and cnc program to cut out the panels. Found the local fabric store had speaker grill material to put behind them to remove the distraction.  Seems to work for me. Functional.  ;D

Good catch, the Lamp on top was the first thing i every built 1965 Jr High wood shop.
It is plugged in the the PLC as my controlled night light.
I'm not one to read manuals off a computer real well (bifocals  :o)  So they are all reference documents. Just not labeled as of yet.
The musical instruments are for a lamp I hope to make some day. Items I picked up cheap at garage sales.

Figured giving a wider view in the photo, that people would be looking around,  ::)
Most of the books that are in the hutch now are all technical reference material. Keeps them handy as my mind goes from one idea to the next.
Always seems like I have 14 projects going on at a time.
Working on an upgrade to a CO2 laser table now. I have Arts new laser control box built but the working area of the laser table I had was just not to my dreamy needs.
Hoping I can make double duty out of the new project and add a 3d filament print head option to it too.
Looking forward to a productive winter.

Finally took some time to get my (Dynomotion's KFlop/Kanalog) four axis Lathe using (3) Parker Gemini Servos and (2) Mitsubishi J3 Servo drives all analog 0-10volt setup to cut Threads (G32)
Yes, its just wax, so much easier on my blood pressure.  ;) What I'd learned from programming with Lua helped in my need to be able to control the Spindle as a rotating drive and as a positioning device, then have it switch back and forth automatically. Having a vision and being able to achieve it takes TIME.  Educating by reading, testing & time to get capable, and get my mind wrapped around all the issues.

Note: The Kflop uses C programming and this was cut using their KmotionCNC software.

Not sure where Dynomotion is on their plugin for Mach4 but the design and build of this machine was focused on having control to turn and contour mill using Mach4 (started this project years ago). Though I used this machine as a turning center over the past couple of years, I am getting closer to my dream. ;)

Never give up 8) Everyone learns at there own pace.

Thank you Sir, nice to have a plan start to come together.  ;D

The photo shows a 1-1/4" x 7 thread cut in 10 passes and 3 cleanup passes at a 29degree angle.

and for you TP you said you like fancy macros and cool code here is the macro I created to cut threads using G32.
Have one for the cutting uniform shapes too (1 - 360+) sides.
makes life a lot easier then relying on a post processor that mostly spits out useless code.

Code: [Select]
O7734 (G32 Macro for Threading)
#1=-1.15 (length in Z)
#2=1.125 (diameter of screw)
#3=.2 (Z clearance)
#8=.3 (X clearance)
#4=10 (number of cutting steps or passes)
#5=3 (number of cleanup passes)
#21=0 (Start in Z position)
#6=29 (vector angle to thread at)
#7=7 (Threads per inch)
(External Thread Depth = .61343 x [ 1/# of threads per inch])
(Internal Thread Depth = .54127 x [ 1/# of threads per inch])

#20=#2 (X value to go to)
#7=[1/#7] (Pitch Feed)
#9=[0.61343 * #7] (Thread depth at 75%)
#9=[#9/#4] (Thread pass increment depth)
#6=tan[#6*#9](step over value in Z using the vector angle)
#9=[#9*2] (to make it in Diameter mode)

G20 G90
m100 (my spindle orientation call)
G97 S400 M04
M98 P100 L[#4] (cut threading passes)
M98 P101 L[#5] (cleanup passes)
G0 X#2
M30

O100 (Cut)
G00 X[#2 + #8] Z[#21 + #3]
#20=[#20 - #9]
X[#20]
G32 X[#20] Z[#1] F#7
G00 X[#2 + #8]
#21=[#21 - #6]
Z[#21 + #3]
g4p2
m99

O101 (Finish)
G00 X[#2 + #8] Z[#21 + #3]
X[#20]
G32 X[#20] Z[#1] F#7
G00 X[#2 + #8]
Z[#21 + #3]
g4p2
m99

Note: No guarantees it works on your setup as this was written for kmotionCNC until Mach4 plugin is done.

Since I've made that video, been using this little program every now and then. Saves lots of time and makes life simple. However, cutting a hex with a standard tool bit hardly gives sufficient clearance. Starting from octagon and on things get better. But in plastics and aluminum, hexagons are no problem either.

Thanks Dan for letting me try your code out, not sure id ever use it but Ya-Nvr-No

Had to make some changes as it did not work the same for me as you.
It did not want to rotate the spindle fully till I added some multipliers and loop indexers
but I did get it to work, cool code thou confusing to follow.

Here's a real short clip of it running. (slow) ;)

http://youtu.be/kA1u10cX2SM

Update: Think I figured a use for this, I need to create a hex in some large screws. Think I will try to adapt it to do ID hex profiling, If I can get it close to size I can then Grind a hex in a old carbide end mill and then use it as a sizing broach.  8)

You think Lua is tough, working with Dynomotions C programs makes it all worth while. Whole different world working with source code and controlling machines. Then again Macro A and FapLadder was a PITA to learn too.  8)

Title: Re: I'm in Hog Heaven
Post by: Ya-Nvr-No on January 10, 2015, 09:43:33 PM
Other than what I posted on the dynomotion site I have kept it pretty :-X But its damn functional for what my plans are for it. I love the kanalog board that goes with the kflop, true servo motor control. Nice to be able to control both positioning and low to full speed with either a positional movement "G0 C45" or a mcode "m4 S900" and then also do the same with a mill spindle head "G0 B180" or "m104 S3000" and use both spindles at the same time in any combination. m102 turns off the mill spindle or m5 turns both off And being servo its fast. Also the spindle override slider works to control them independent. Then as soon as the spindle stops the axis DRO is updated, the C program source code computes and updates to the correct 0-360 degree. Also on a m30 I have it spindle orient so the chuck key slot is up and accessible. Also as a plan is using it as a tool and cutter grinder to resharpen end mills. Just takes a lot of time to get it all to come together. I was out writing macros today to do spiral machining.

Servo tuning with the Dynomotion system gives me some rigid spindle holding capabilities.

On a side note, two of my routers have the provision for a dumore tool post grinder mount that I use to resharpen my lawn mower blades. Its all automatic and although it takes most of a work day for a 6 blades, they never need to be checked for balance.  ;) Ya-Nvr-No what I,m doing from day today. So I always design and build for fit, function and adaptability. I write alot of parametric macros, easy for me to follow and they are tight & short. Gets the job done well and again, adaptable.

I noticed your posts over on the yahoo group, and it still amazes me some of the simple solutions that Tom suggests, for what appear to be complex problems.

I was more interested in some photos, as your video only gives a little glimpse of the machine. I was only being nosey, as I like to look at what other people have created to see what ideas can I borrow for my own equipment :)
Title: Re: I'm in Hog Heaven
Post by: Ya-Nvr-No on January 11, 2015, 07:50:07 AM
Cant say it was a simple implementation,  ;) as it took a couple of days of debugging to get it to work perfect. real dance with the c code threads. The more I learn about programming the better I get at achieving my needs.

Hopefully when I start creating my dream projects, I will provide some videos that show more. But the real show to me is what's inside. I've been a tool maker for over 45 years, learning to control those tools is what drives and impresses me now days.  ;D Because when it comes down to it, we just want to get the job done.

Thanks, Yep I like gang tooling machines, programmed them for years, just never had one with live tooling. A few turrets machine I programmed had live tooling.

Forgot to mention, this will handle 9.5" inch diameter 36" long piece for turning and milling or a 20" diameter piece in the table gap. And the milling head can be manually rotated 90 degrees to machine in line with the lathe spindle axis. Tried to make it as versatile as I could with the components I found available.

Though Not a true power workhouse, This thing does have some versatility.  ;)

Used ArtCam for shape design from dxf file and then to create the stl file, Rhino to position the stl object in 3d space, DeskProto to generate the gcode, then a text editor to swap the axis's to the lathe profile.

Takes Years, a lot reading and then Trial & Error till it finally starts to make sense.
Now to see if I can write a post processor for Rhino5/MadCam 5axis

I have a love-hate relationship with these wedge block tool holders.
Found when I added one that the handle interfered with another one.
So I found the angle wrote a macro and machined 3 new holes 90 degrees apart @ 74 degrees in this case. (that must be... China 75 degree)

Now have this machine configured to be setup as a lathe or a mill (in this case I ran it as a mill using X & Z to feed in and out)
z=x
x=y
y=z
c=a
a=b
b=c
