Here's a couple of pictures of the first MDF mock up to come off the newly built router .. Actual guitar will be made of hardwoods and I'll post some pictures after it's machined.
Software used: AutoCad, Cut2D, Cut3D, Mach3. Machine specs: 660mmX1270mm, 25mm profile linear rails, zero backlash ballscrews & nuts, 680oz steppers, gecko 203v, steel & aluminum construction.

;D ;D ;D ;D I know I won't be the only one watching and waiting on this topic!!!

Sam ,
You got that right. :D
Ed

OK, here's an update ..
A jig for locating material and machining both sides .. Red circles are pins that locate jig to table. Yellow, Blue & Green circles are pins that locate material to jig.
Other pics are roughed neck, partially finish carved body ..
-
Very nice setup, nice machine too, nice pictures, every thing is very nice, great work
Thanks for sharing.
Hope to see a finish guitar.

Update on progress .. first guitar completely machined with home built cnc is ready for final sanding & finish.
-
Looks very nice.
Keep on with the updates.
Ed

Thanks Ed!
-
Looks Great!! I love the cantrasts in the wood.
-
Thanks Jammerm,
Not sure exactly what finish will wind up on this guitar ..
There's some talk about going opaque on the back and a sunburst on the front .. well see. I'll post more when we're there.
Gary
-
Looking really nice. I like it.
-
Thanks for the vote of confidence!
-
That's truly beautiful work - You have certainly built a machine to be proud of Gary. Hope to see lots more projects soon.
Tweakie.
-
Thank you Tweakie ..
I plan to at least follow this first guitar through to the end on this thread ..
Contemplating an RF45 conversion next .. the old 'Round Column' just isn't doing it for me any more now that I've gotten my feet wet with CNC .. we'll see!
-
Very nice, I'm very intersted in your jig process. I've got lots of pieces that I need to machine both sides of an object and I don't have the 6th axis set up yet. Are you following any particular method in setting that up? Are you open to questions?

Sure, if I can help

Update,
Long way to go yet, but guitar is starting to come together ..

Lookin awesome. Very nice job.
Ed

You know your gonna have to give us a demo of how it sounds when your done. Looks nice.
-
Looking professional! Very beautiful!
Daniel

Thanks Ed, Sam & Dan
My boy is certainly making his old man proud!
Gary
-
Another step closer ..
-
As I mentioned on the Zone, the work is looking fantastic ;)
Dave
-
Thanks Dave appreciate the compliment!
-
Update ..
Wish I had a better picture, but this is the only one so far of the completed guitar ..
There should be more coming, but wanted to add this to the thread to show it's still moving along ..
-
That is just to cool. Beautiful job , BUT , wheres the tremo bar? :D
Ed
-
Just not installed in this picture ..
It'll be there when final pictures are made I'm sure!
Now the plan is to look into custom fitting a case ..
-
The trem bar jumped out of the tremolo socket as it didn't want to be noticed (it hates getting its picture taken :P ) , but he didn't make it far enough :D (it's laying there on the bench)
Looks great, my friend, we need better pics (front and back) of that masterpiece though!!

It's obviously been a while since posting ..
A couple of tweaks were discovered to be necessary after completing & playing the first guitar so a few minor changes were made & another guitar built ..
The color difference is obvious .. all other changes amounted to tweaking a dimension here & there ..
Reviews by several musicians & a dealer have all been very favorable ..
Our thanks to Mach3 for making this kind of thing possible to home users!
-
Very Nice job, love the new fret board too.
Noticed the Access cutouts have changed but the overall theme is still the very classy design, color & accent.
You and your son should be proud.
Bet you both learned a lot that can be applied to future instruments.
Keep having fun!
-
More pics ..
Just a couple shots to show one of latest completed instruments ..
At this point the same design is being repeated with different woods, hardware, & finishes .. new designs will be added in the future.
-
Nice work, fellas, and especially like the "hollow" inlays on this model.
I'm a big fan as you can see..... Birdseye surrounded by brass ring. ;)
Thanks as always for sharing, love your work.

Beautiful Dave,
Very clever & quite unique .. It's a nice look!

Thanks so much, Gary. It's actually an interesting little project. A friend of mine across the pond put a web article about if you'd like to check it out:

Thanks,

-
Amazing Dave,
Beautiful guitar & I'm especially impressed with the custom machine work ..
Stunning!
-
Beautiful work from both of you! Wow. How long is the wait list? gd, how many hours do you estimate from start to finish? I want to play 1. I am sure my 4 chords wont be worthy but it would still be fun!
-
Thanks for the compliments,
The guitar business is my son's doing, I just built the CNC Router & a few other tools for him to use in his endeavor ..
I really don't know what the wait time is right now .. he might have something ready to ship for all I know.
Hope I'm not violating any policies on the forum here, but his name is Joel & his contact info is: jmarsh@marshguitars.com if you would like to investigate further.

Hi Gary. That is some beautiful work! There seems to be many years of experience behind your and your son's craft. There are many details to getting a CNC machine just right and even more to get a guitar just right for a given player. Very well done!
-
Nice work and hope the boy makes a mill so he give a bunch or at least a free guitar.
RICH

Thanks for the kind words,
I think the kid really has some skills (but then I guess I'm a little partial?)
Already got my 'payback' guitar .. it's beautiful!
I tried to upload a pic but can't seem to get one to go through ..
-
Here it is ..
-
Breathtaking! Thanks for the photo.
-
awesome stuff
-
Thanks much!
Here's a couple of the newest variations on a single cutaway model that was added to the lineup ..
-
WOW Nice guitars. My son is desperate to get g-code for an electric guitar. He is a left handed so any one having designs for a left handed guitar?
-
Gary,
What are you using for the finish top coat?
RICH
-
Sorry for the delay, been sidetracked & haven't visited the forum for a while ..
All finishes are Nitro Lacquer ..
-
Gary,
I plan on taking a tour of the Martin Guitar factory in very near future.
Should be very interesting from a construction point of view since I don't play the guitar.
Anything I should ask them ?

WOW Nice guitars. My son is desperate to get g-code for an electric guitar. He is a left handed so any one having designs for a left handed guitar?
I am a lefty. Everything is made for right handed people because with a handicap like that they wouldn't be able to cope. Tell him to learn to play right handed. It is like the mouse on a computer. Do you really want to make it tough to sit down at someone else's computer and be able to work? Same with the guitar. I think it is important to be able to pick up one and just play. That makes you a lot more popular than saying "Anybody got a left hand one?"
-
Rich,
Martin's are some of the best you can get .. but a whole different animal from the electrics.
I would imagine you can get some CNC work-holding ideas from them ..
My guess is they utilize CNC equipment very effectively.
Garylucas,
As a matter of fact my son Joel who is the builder of all these guitars is also a lefty ..
But things being as they are (mainly cost & availability) he plays & builds right handed guitars.
-
gd.marsh,
Finaly got around to taking the Martin plant tour. Very interesting. I was rather suprised with the amount of hand work that goes into making their guitars. Most of the cnc work is done for major bulk parts like the necks and wood prep work and that is were a lot of the cnc machines are used. One must pay for that tour , it's a different tour than the free one. Anybody is in the neighborhood of Nazareth, Pa. I would recommend the tour and and look at the museum.
RICH
-
Very cool Rich,
I have a good friend who also makes custom acoustic guitars .. very 'jig & hand work' oriented stuff. Then on the other hand he does almost entirely 1-off pieces so no real need for CNC.
My son is still at it with the electrics & has recently made a pair using 'African Limba' or what is also called 'Korina' on the bodies.
-
Rich, yep, that's a great little tour they have going over there........
Dave
-
How did you create the carved top
-
The guitar body was modeled in AutoCad & Vectric Cut3D CAM software was used to create gcode.
