Title: All in one lathe screen (Beta)
Post by: softselect on December 27, 2009, 03:07:44 PM
hi Everyone,
I have finally finished my lathe screenset, thanks to Klaus and his great software, it was a brease
one or two buttons are still not working, still trying to get to the bottom of it.
As i dont have an MPG can some one please test that part for me
Any comments welcome, good or bad  ;)
Unzip and copy the Softlathe.lset in the Mach3 directory ie. C:\mach3\SoftLathe1v3.lset and the softlathe directory into the bitmap dir ie. C:\mach3\bitmaps\SoftLathe
Friedrich

Update: added some stuff left out by mistake i.e. Part Zero DRO's
Update:29 Dec Toolpath and buttons now working thanks to Klaus
Update:7 Jan New version featuring tool wear calculation

Good going and nice to have a choice in screens for the lathe.
What buttons don't work?
I guess my only comment would be a loaded question. What should the ideal lathe screen be like?

hi rich,
i know its a bit crowded but i just get fed up jumping between screens
the tool path display doesnt work, the save fixtures dont work and the Spindle cw, cww is screwed up, probly me ;), you should know what late nights do to ones brain
i am bussy with an update, adding a screen refresh and toolpath on/off buttons, see it will help
thanks for looking

"its a bit crowded"
I don't know if you can realy create "one ideal screen"  and, as such, you probably can't fit it on one screen, but
everybody works differently.

"fed up jumping between screens"
I know what you mean, and Phil addressed that and additionaly added a few nice features to the original lathe screen with more to come.

I would be interested in having lathe users respond to efforts by you folks. Maybe wishfull thinking, but, just imagine if a defined logic could be defined by the lathe users, efforts shared in creating the screens....
Just a cloud above my head!

 Looking good :)
Will download and try it on my lathe in a while and see if the MPG is working.
Rich
as you say not one will do all people, I have just done (still not finished) a screen for the new mill to have most things on one page and the lathe is next but I know for a fact it is made for the way I work and the things I need and others will have different requirements.

You asked about the DRO's on the Yahoo group. Uncheck boxed DRO's in general Config.

thanks Hood,
I also find something weard about the CW and CWW LED's, still trying to get to the bottom of it
I will appreciate the MPG test, I dont need it as i am using XBox joystick, but maybe in the future, who knows

MPG seems to work fine :)
Also toolpath is viewing fine for me.

Graphics seem a bit slow to update but that could be because you are using JPegs rather than Png's but to be honest I dont really know if that would make much difference.

Thanks for testing, great to know it works, the toolpath was sorted by Klaus lastnight, some thing to do with the order in the bitmap overlay, i alway thought the last added will display first, apparently not.
Friedrich

Update: I will try PNG instead of JPG, I see the file in png is about half the size

I like the look of your screen Friedrich. Could you add an LED besides the tool number to indicate if the offset for the tool is active?

Not sure if it will make a difference, could just be my graphics card is a bit slow.

Hood,
Like you said, everybody works differently and will desire different things for whatever reason.
One thing for sure, seems like the original lathe screens don't satisfy the needs of a lot of folks.
The logic ( never seen anything posted about it) of the screens seems to be more geared to an OEM and doing multiple parts. Then when the average user does a one of a kind he finds the screens cumbersome.

Do you have any insight into what Brian is thinking of doing to the Lathe screen for Mach4?

Oh and the original Turn screen was done by Steve Blackmore, seemingly he had quite a consultation with the Yahoo guys and visited lots of local shops to see what they thought but afraid I have never liked it and any CNC turners I have shown it to felt the same.

Having said that, personally it wouldnt matter what the standard screen looked like as I would alter it to suit my own needs anyway, thats one of the many great things about Mach, it allows you to do such things and actually its very easy to do once you get started.

Hi guys,

I am about to install 8"TFT with touch to my lathe, has anyone done simple Lathe screens usable with so small screen?
Title: Re: All in one lathe screen (Beta)
Post by: Overloaded on December 29, 2009, 11:03:26 AM
also..whatever works well as a standard screen, probably would not be suitable for a touch screen...and vice versa.

The only problem with a modified  screen is if somebody posts a question on use, you may not have a clue as to what they are talking about.

I like creativity and the user posted screens provide choice.

I can feel the vacuum of screen design sucking me in, but still not letting go of the anchor.  :D

Benjt, haven't seen one that small. You could make your own..several pages or use hoods with a stylus

Well I'm flattered, honored, and thankful.

Thankful you didn't confuse me with Hood.

Flattered Russ could imagine it would insult me.

Honored to be here with the rest of you half bakes.  ;D

I have finally got my new all in one lathe screen to work like i want, big thanks to Graham Waterworth and Klaus for their help
the tool wear gets entered as the difference between what the part measures and what it should be, the click on calculate and the value will be added or subtracted from the tool wear, so if the part measures 1mm smaller the tool must move +1 so u enter 1 in the dro and click calc and the value will be subtracted from the tool wear
that probably sound complicated but it works simple if u want the tool to move positive enter a positive value and visa verse
i have also added a feed rate override % dro, the figure change but during a cut it has no effect on the feed rate, i don't know if this is only related to lathe or if it is related to the screenset (using 3.042.032)
can someone please do some testing 4 me
thanks Friedrich

PS the update is in the first post of this thread

I am using your very nice screen softselect an i would comment over the feed rate override %, he is working sure 100*100 you only need
in general config decrease the "lookahead" number. to see the effect.

Tks. softselect for your work.

I have been using this screenset and love it.   I would however like to change a few buttons/led's that I do not need or use for something on my wish list.   Attempts to make these changes have not had good success, apparently the methods used are much different than other screensets I have modified with either screen4 or Klaus's program.

Anyone done this, any tips that would help?   Its so close to perfect for my uses I would hate to have to find another screenset alternative.
