Title: DSPMC controller and Orom Servo Driver/Motor interface

Dear All;

I am xavi. I am trying to set up an X-Y positionner, to move an antenna in X-Y plane controlled by a PC.  My main problem is on connection between the DSPMC/IP controller and the Omron servo driver.  I haven't used/build machine control tools/software before, but i need to set up the positionner so we can start with the practical experiment on the research we are doing. I have been watching the Mach3 video tutorial and also reading the omron servos/DSPMC user guides but I still have few probs.  So I am kindly open to any suggestion from you guys.  We have the following devices with us:

Mach3 Software

From Omron:
2x Omron Servo Driver   R88D UA12V
2x Omron Servo Motor     R88M U40030VA S1   (one drive the x-axis and the other for y-axis)  

From vital system:
1x DSPMC/IP Controller from vital system  (is able to controll up to 6 axis as it say on the data sheet)
2x 7711 breakout board (to be connected j2 and J6 of DSPMC/IP)
1x 7535 Digital I/O board  (to be connected j4 of DSPMC/IP)

The connection between the 7711/7535 and the DSPMC/IP are straight forward following the user manual. The home and limit switches are to be directly connected (through the 7535) to J4/j5 pins of the DSPMC controller.  

Problems i am having...

1 -The user guide of the controller on the hardware connection the DAC and Amp enable output signal goes into the analogue servo amp.  How many connections from the controller to Servo driver (SD) are need to run the motor ?  (suppose 1 axis only) and which pins should I connect to on the servo driver.

2 - The Servo Motor (SM) as encoder output can I connect it straight in to J6 of the controller (using the breakout board) or It is better to connect to the CN2 of the Servo driver (SD), and from the  SD CN1 pins 20 - 25 (the encoder output) connect to J6 pins of the DSPMC/IP controller ?  

I am looking forward for any suggestion on how to connect them two.

Hi Xavi,
It would have been better to post this under the DSPMC section.

That said, Do you have a wiring diagram for the omron servo driver?

There are at least 2 ways to run the encoder inputs. You could run them directly to the DSPMC and run the drive without encoder input. Tis is called torque mode. This is only possible if the drive is capable of this. If the drive must have encoder input, you must split the signal and connect it to the DSPMC as that is how it does the positioning. This of course goes back to the first question, do you have a manual for the drives?

Yes I do have the manuals for the both DSPMC and Omron drive. I am new on the forum, I wonder how I can post the manual it on here. or better if you don't mind I could send them to you by email.

You would be best to post a link to the manuals location.

Usually these kind of drives will need the motors encoder to input to them but they also usually have an encoder output pulse so you can then carry it on to the DSPMC.

Page 18 has the hadware connection example and from 12-17 the pins description

The servo driver is R88D-UA12V an the motor is R88M-U40030VA-S1 with incremental encoder without brake user guide is under this link:

Chapter 5 gives the specifications of the pins on both servo driver and motor.

Looks like 14 to 20 on CN2 are where you will put the motor encoders and then Pins 20 to 25 on the I/O connector are differential outputs for taking to your DSPMC. They would go to J6 on your DSPMC.

thanks for the suggestion... 
Apart from the encoder signals... are there any other connection needed from the CN1 port and the DCPMC J4 and J5 port?.
For example the direction signal (Clockwise or ACW or ), the speed or torque signals.  Looking forward to suggestion.

Not had any experience with analogue input drives but I am presuming you can use either speed or torque inputs depending on how you set up the drive. The direction signal will I suppose depend on whether the motor is rotating the correct way, would need a bit more reading of the manual to see if these are indeed the case.
