Title: controlling metal shavings...
Post by: BarryB on October 28, 2009, 12:33:41 AM
Hey folks, I had to grind down a couple 8020 parts tonight to slip into my machine, and I got metal shavings everywhere.  They weren't like having dust shavings.  They stick to everything, and are like tiny needles.  What do you guys do to control this, keeping the shavings to a minimum?  Damn, that really blew...

You say "grind". Well for one, i literaly put the machine in a bag to keep grinding off the machine. In fact i got rid of my tool post grinder for the lathe because it wasn't worth the aggrivation. The small surface grinder i have is as far away from everything as i could locate it. No matter what you do you get dust in the shop from it! The fine dust from the diamond wheel grinder has a temporary enclosure around it ( diamond dust + oil = lapping compound on everything). And the vac is running when i grind.

One sure way to avoid the problem is to do wet grinding or just put the grinding equipment in there owne room/building, place.
