Take the power to the MPG from your computer or breakout board , put the A and B channels of the MPG to two inputs, go into Machs Ports and Pins then the Encoder tab, set the port and pin numbers you have used and thats it except for calibrating. To calibrate go the Function Configs menu then Calibrate MPG, remember to save before you exit.

cheers hood,
how do you operate it ie switch it on and change axis

If you press the Tab key a flyout screen will appear which will allow control of the MPG, I prefer to have physical switches on the panel to change between MPG and JOG, also to change axis and also to change between Velocity mode and MultiStep mode.

Yes, I have 3 buttons on the Mill and two  on the lathe and the pendant I have for the mill uses a rotary switch. Just have to have enough spare inputs.

I have never used it but lots do and they say it works well when set up correctly, that is if you are using the parallel port.

I have one of the 80mm dia ones from Peter, not actually used it yet on a machine but the feel and quality are nice :)
I have used it whilst messing with the AC servo drives and motors here in the house and it works well.

Hood,
I would like to use a rotary axis switch like you did, looking at maplins they do a 3 pole 4 way: part number FF75S.
would this do it?
I am going to use a seperate pci PP for all of the MPG connections, any chance on a heads up on wiring?
I noticed you have other buttons are these worth while and are the buttons make to break or momentry?
  Cheers

I used  79-0200 from Rapid
http://www.rapidonline.com/Electronic-Components/Switches/Rotary-Switches/PCB-Mounting-rotary-switches/30305/kw/rotary+switch.

What you needing info on regards wiring? is it the MPG or Buttons?

The buttons are momentary and I use them all the time even though I have touch screens on all machines.

Not sure how you set up the rotary switch?
Also what is the velocity step buisness?

Velocity is where the Axis moves in relation to the speed you rotate the MPG. Step is actually MultiStep where each click of the MPG will move the amount you have set for the Step value, mine is permanently set to 0.01mm.

Wiring is easy, all you do is put the common terminal of the rotary switch to Gnd and then each position to an Input, same for momentary switches, one side to Gnd other to the Input.
Are you going to be using a PoKeys for the buttons/switch or just the Parallel Port?

How do you associate the inputs to the axis?
Not sure what pokeys are?

Set each Input up as an OEM Trigger then go to Config menu System HotKeys and enter the OEM code for the function you are wanting that trigger to work.
See the doc I did for the pendant I made, you will find it here.

It might answer a few questions but if not just shout back :)

I just looked and fr the pendant I used a Brain to work the buttons but doing it via the System HotKeys is just as easy. You will not for the setup of the OEM Triggers I have Port10, that is because its the PoKeys I am using but if you are using a second port then it will be Port 2

Hood,
would the OEM keys be 185,186,187,188 for the axis selection
,204,205 for jog selection?
just using second parallel port, with pins 2-9 as inputs.
I think I am starting to get my head around it,I will have a couple of weeks before the mpg arives,to decide which
buttons to have on my pendant.

OEM button codes 1-99 select the corresponding screenset page.  The "tab" jog page is #50.  So, DoOEMButton(50) will pop it out.

Afraid that wont work Ray, it seems to be a special case for the Tab screen, DoOemButton(323) should work though :)

Hood,
I have set port 2 to having pins 2-9 as inputs but pins 10,11,12,13,15 on port 2 dont now work.
is that correct?

No, they should all be inputs.

OK,
  I have,

 pin 10-  input 7   -276 cont jog
      11- input8    - 1008 zero x
       12- input9   -1009 zero y
       13- input10  -1010 zero z

can you see a problem with these settings?

You trying to set as OEM triggers? if so you dont use Inputs, you need to use OEM Triggers.

yes they are set up in hotkeys oem trigers.
pins 2&3 are the mpg a&b

Even if I go to automated setting it does not register as a button being pressed when its scanning.

Yes but on the Ports and Pins, Inputs page have you set them up as Input 7, 8, 9 and 10? If yes then that is no use, you need to use OemTrigger 1, 2 3..... 14, 15 etc

Should work then, not looked up the OEM codes but if they are correct it should work.
If you want to attach your xml I will see if I can test when I get home.

Just to throw some more wierdness in the pot,I have just dropped the xml and the pendant onto another
computer with a second PP and the oposite group of triggers dont work ie 2-9 whereas 10-15 functions do??

That is quite possible as your card may not support or be set up for Bi-Directional use. I had one card that could not be set up that way so I just used the motherboards port as Port 2 and used the PCI as Port 1.

Afraid I cant find the PCI Parallel port to test :( Had a look through your xml and dont see anything wrong, maybe as a test set your motherboards port as port 2 and see if the signals are seen correctly.
