Title: LCD Monitors-too cold/hot?

Hi all,

Are there standards for LCD screen monitors? In other words, if someone has a shop in a garage, and it can get to freezing at nights in the winter or very hot (95 degrees) in the summer, will this damage LCD screens?

I would think there's a limit that they can take but these get shipped all over the country and are subjected to extreme temperatures and still work correctly when received by customers.

Anyone know for sure?

Dave,
  I bought 2 last winter. Dell 15". They were delivered with freight that was below zero F for 2 days.
One was still quite cold when I hooked it up, +20 ish, and was solid dark red until it warmed up. Worried me for a spell. Been perfect ever since.
FWIW.
I am sure of nothing.....cept taxes and death  lol

Thanks for the input, RC, I'm hoping someone will know for sure the "ruggedness" these things can take.

Temp swings will not damage the lcd screen, only make for a really bad refresh rate/ghosting (when very cold) and get whiter/brighter when really warm.

Thank you, my shop (converted garage) is allowed to get cold or heat up (depending on the season) overnight when I'm not in there as I don't keep it "environmentally controlled".

I'm interested in getting a different monitor and a higher resolution and an LCD would be really nice to have but I was definitely worried about the temperature situations.

My shop never gets that hot, I am in Scotland so you knew that anyway ;D
In the winter however it is often cold enough to freeze the coolant and I have not had any issues with the screens so you should be fine :)

Hood, it's interesting as it varies among monitors and even different monitors in the same brand. For example, Dell has 1 monitor that will be safe operating down to 14 degrees Ft. while they have another that's only good down to 32 degrees Ft. Well needless to say here in the Northeast, that's not probably not a good candidate for me.

May I ask what monitor you're using? Is your shop allowed to freeze at night?

My shop freezes during the day in the winter and so do I LOL. I have an ELO, two Samsungs and a Dell, afraid I dont know the models.

Not sure how compact or close the pc and the monitor, but...... here is the thought ....
In a bag / enclosure with just a light bulb to keep them at some temperature...
wouldn't cost all of a buck a month....

Please don't ask what to do in the summer.  ;)
