Title: Machine protection
Post by: spnar on April 05, 2009, 01:03:58 PM
Hi Guys

I have nearly completed my cnc engraver and need some advice on screw and guide protection.
Since this machine is a moving table design my main concern is to cover the guides and screw of the x axis.
I was thinking of a roller blind arrangement.
Any advice or links will be appreciated.

Hi,

Two roller blinds, one mounted at each end of the axis with the ends attached to the table, sounds like an extremely good idea to me. Make sure you fit them the right way up so that stuff falls off the ends and does not get rolled up into the blind though.  :)

Interesting idea, and how will you keep them from locking?

Simple:
Look at the mechanism at the end of the roller. You be able to figure out how to disable the latch. The same reason they don't work right half the time anyway  :D

I have seen some commercial stuff but the prices are well beyond my reach.
I am thinking of building my own.
For blind material i think i will use rubber gasket material and make a couple of rollers with coil springs.
My travel for X axis is only about 300mm anyway.
