Title: Guitar Fans?
Post by: budman68 on April 01, 2009, 11:27:03 AM
Ok, so I see we have a few guitar fans here and I thought I'd start a thread to talk,,, well,,,, about guitars ;D

As always, pics are great so show us what ya got!

I've played for quite a long time until I hit a "brick wall" and pretty much just quite playing. I never really got good enough to "be" something as I just never disciplined myself to practice correctly. I'd just "jam" with every Tom, Dick, and Harry, and then even recorded a lot of my own stuff .

I never really completely got away from it because I loved building them and collecting them as well. Hell, now I'm making parts for them so it's always been a part of me. I'm a huge Jackson/Charvel fan but have quite a few others as I'm basically a guitar "whore". At least that's what my wife calls me....  :D

Thanks,
Dave

Well, you already know I'm a guitar player wannabe. After selling my Charvel+Crate amp in a time of misfortune, I lost most of my desire to play. I bought a cheap Ibanez, slapped some good pickups in it, but it still plays like crap, and so do I. I pick it up and try desperately to learn something every few months. The urge usually last for a month or maybe 2, then it sits in the corner, and my fingers are hardened from calluses once again. I would like to make a good guitar body, but it's just not on the top of my priority list. I remember back a few years ago, there used to be a program called "Mplayer". It was a voice chat program, and had hundreds of channels for anybody and everybody. It also had lots of guitar player channels, and you could go in and people would take turns playing. It was a really great thing. All good things come to an end I guess.

Hi Sam,

Got any pics of the Ibanez and Charvel?

I have a few but I'll start with the Firecrackle Model 6, which was my first Charvel and still have it as it's just an amazing player and I have sentimental reasons for keeping it.

Dave, that's what mine looked like. :) Only mine had a maple bolt on neck. I think it was a model 7?? Hated to sell it, but needed the cash. :(

I hate it when that happens to folks, Gerry,  >:(

The Model 7 was actually a tele shaped guitar, I had 3 of them but thinned out to just 2 for the moment -  :D

Model 4, then. ;)

Since it had the maple fretboard, it would have been a Model 4M  ;D

Very good guitars and those necks feel great when the clear coat is sanded off and gunstock oil or tung oil is applied -

Guitars,

I've got a couple. Fender Squire Strat , Jackson Performer, Ibanez Gax70, Gregg Bennett acoustic, and  A Danville Dobro , and can't play any of them..  LOL   :D  Requires practice , which requires time, which I never seem to have enough of. Who ever said retirement was great was lying. But I also collect Guns , which I have more of. But no time for those either. Will have to start a gun thread.  :D
So who's your favorite guitar players ? Stevie Ray  , Eric Clapton , and of course Chet Atkins, who could pick anything.

I would like to have that Jackson Performer. I'm not really a gun collector, but I have a few. Tactical 12 gauge with aimpoint, Smith & Wesson AR-15, crappy 9mm, 45 Ruger.  I would rather have me a good guitar than another gun.

LOL, no deal Sam,  :D

The Jacksons my favorite . Picked it up used in Miami for a hundred bucks. 9 years ago.
Nice lookin AR you have , full floating barrel. I have an ar with a 24" match barrel. Can hit half dollars at 200 yds.
My favorites are 1911 model 45 pistols.  I have a Colt  polished stainless gold cup, colt officers model, a Springfield Armory with titanium scope mt I made. A Para ordinance 45, w/ 13 round clips, and also a Ruger 45, plus all the others. Hope your stocked up on ammo, cause it's getting hard to find. Thanks Obama. And also lottsa long guns.

Oh, I wouldn't part with any of my guns, but if I were to spend any more money, it would rather it go for a guitar than another gun. I would get allot more enjoyment out of it. Thanks for the AR compliment. The 1911's are my favorite also. Once I get my carry permit, I may go ahead and get me a small handgun. Every time I go target plinking with my AR, the cops show up. I told 'em "I will put ya out a chair, cause your gonna be here allot." He took it one step farther, now he fixin to be my neighbor. HA! I wonder how that's gonna play out. Better go ahead and start that gun thread, cause we've already hijacked Daves thread. Would like to see the mounts ya made.

Here's one I made earlier! About 25 years ago. Mostly machined on a Bridgeport clone. My eldest Daughter played double bass and wanted to try out a bass guitar but the ones that she could afford were not very user friendly or very good musically. The biggest problem was the sustain time and making one out of granite was not practical! This one has excellent sustain and hardly ever needs tuning.

Here's my cheapo Ibanez, and an old Washburn I sold some time ago. That thing was like a lead brick, and needed a couple small parts. The Ibanez has dual Seymour Duncan humbuckers. One active, one passive. Sadly, I don't have any pics of the Charvel, Dave.

Nice work, Ian, always loved the feel of a fretsless but definitely takes some "getting onto" for sure.

Tuners on the back?

What kind of pickups?

Ed, as far as players, that list would go on forever as I like many different types of music. To name a few, Joe Satriani, Al Dimeola, Stevie Ray, David Gilmour, EVH, Eric Johnson, etc.

Another couple of pics for you; This one was a good story, it's the cover model guitar for the Jackson Electronics campaign in 87-88. When I first saw that picture, I was buying a Jackson pickup to put into my guitar and that pic was on the cover. I fell in love with that guitar but there was no way I was affording one of those back then. About 5 years ago, this guitar came up for sale and the seller had no idea what he even had. Needless to say, when I saw the pics of it and then compared the crackle paint "footprint" (no 2 crackle paint jobs are alike as it's a chemical reaction) I had to grab it. Pretty reassuring feeling when I took the trem off for maintenence and saw the "photos rush" note under the clear coat.

It was my Holy Grail of guitars.  :)

Thanks,
Dave

Dave ,
That sure is a beaut. I'd definitly hang on to that one.

My tuner head is an opposite of yours , which is a little unhandy.

Dave ,

As long as they look good , and sound good , that's all that counts.
Kinda looks like your a Jackson collector.

Ed,Dave,

Tuners are 1/4" UNF Allen screws threaded into brass blocks holding the ends of the strings. Pickups I wound on a lathe - 5,000 turns (if I remember correctly) of very fine wire. These were mounted on threaded Alnico magnets 3/16" diameter for height adjustment. Each coil output had a  variable gain op-amp amplifier, the outputs were summed into another op-amp, then fed through a filter circuit. The total length is 40" and it weighs 7lbs. (We were imperial units back then!)

Dave and Ed,
Looks like they just put a left hand neck on a right hand body.
Just for fun ? ? Looks ? ? or what ? ?
Cool anyway.
Thanks,
RC

Well, not really, Rc, as the side dots for the fret markers have to be installed as well so if it was a lefty neck for a righty, there would be no side markers for the player to see  ;). They just make the necks in both styles as a preference thing. The black with silver metalflake crackle I showed is actually a neck-through guitar.

Ian: very cool that you made just about everything and the bass, including the pickups. I guess since the tuners are socket head cap screws, it's a good thing it stays in tune very well-  :D

Ed: Yep, but I don't really consider myself a collector, more of a "hoarder" lol!!

I'll post some more soon-

Thanks for sharing!
Dave

I gotcha Dave, thanks.
I also see that the "Jackson" on the head would be upside down if it were a LH neck on a RH body.
I notice that on most all electrics I've seen that have in-line machine heads, the low E is shortest from the post to the nut and the hi E is the longest.
Any ill effects of reversing this arrangement ?

Of course it's no issue with the 2 x 3 machine head arrangement on some electrics and most acoustics.
Just wondering.... and you'd probably know.
Thanks again,
rC

Sam,

Heres a pic of the titanium scope mount, lower left pic.  Lower right is Colt gold cup, in SS.
Upper right is a Ruger 22 slab side.  Upper left is Para Ordinance 45.

Titanium isn't bad to machine, just run tools at about half speed of normal. This was all done with high speed tools. The star was done with wire edm, I once ran at a job.
I'm a lot better with one of these than a Guitar. and make more noise.  ;D
And easier to Tune.

Nice, Ed. I wish we had a good EDM. We had to turn down a job a couple days ago because ours wasn't capable of doing it. It's ready for the scrap heap, along with the seiki VMC. I was tempted to buy a S&W today, but it was a .40 cal, and I want a wide body 9mm. I did purchase a Jackson PS4 on ebay today, hope it arrives and all is well. Normally, used guitars are not something you want to get from ebay. Crossing my fingers. Do me a favor Dave and cross yours for me too! It's not a high end model, but it's a definite step up from the Ibanez.

NOW you're talkin' Ed !
I like my guitars but I LOVE my guns.
And I can play them real good with only ONE finger. ;D
Cool stuff guys,

Fingers crossed, Sam, and here's my PS-4 with a dinky reverse maple neck I used to have years ago.

I kind of miss that one-  :)

Sorry for the bad pic but it's the only one I have of it-

Looks allot like the one I bought, except for the rosewood fingerboard.  http://app.infopia.com/img/image/fp/VPID/7104085/img2/img.jpg
for $150.00 shipped, I really can't complain, unless it don't arrive.
