Title: How would you physically wire this?
Post by: MechanoMan on March 27, 2009, 06:34:19 AM
I am not sure how I'd be able to work with a ribbon cable here, hooking up to a G540 which uses a parallel port cable.

I'm quite skilled at splicing but most of my experience says trying to splice a ribbon cable to anything is just a bad idea.  The wire's very thin and with a really wide cable like this the mechanical stress of whichever lead is shortest is pretty extreme.  I'm no stranger to hacking together hardware, and do quite well at it, but on a mill it's just asking for too much trouble.  A broken wire could cause a lot of damage.

At first I thought this would be easy enough to get around, but the more I look at the problem, the more uncertain I am.

Is there a standard part that would adapt the ribbon cable to a DB25 or what?

So far the only thing I can think of is to get a ribbon cable PCB connector and a DB25 PCB connector and design a PCB to tie them together so the G540 can be mated with it... but it's an awful lot to go through to connect these two.

Guys, You can buy a LPH26 to DB25 cable right on the Warp 9 site. That is why they have it available there. It makes it plug and play...

Well, I was planning on putting in an order with Keling anyways and saw it there:

I asked about the DB25 cable listed and they said it is straight DB25 to DB25.  So is Keling selling it with no way to hook it up to a G540?

I'm assuming that the way they Keling has it listed on their website means that they are including a USB cable and LPH26->DB25 with the SmoothStepper, but it is not clear they way they listed things...

If your in doubt about what you will get from them I just started handling the SS on my website: http://soigeneris.com/shop/Warp9_97624.aspx. To be honest I forgot to include some of the LPH26->DB25 with my first order but will have several coming in on my next shipment.
