Ok, got the frame in the basic form. The frame sitting in front is the door and will sit inside (recessed) into the enclosure frame. I originally wanted to do a Piano hinge but not sure, I think I have another sleeker idea. I also had a good thought on using those little gas struts for supports on each side, much like you see used on truck cap doors or a car hatchback or trunk. I think that'll be a nice feature since I wanted the full frontal opening of the enclosure so I can get around comfortably in there.
I'm going to hold off on making my coolant "tray" as I'm not positive how I'm doing it just yet (probably going with fiberglass cloth and epoxy), and because I use this machine just about daily, I can't just leave it all disconnected until I figure out what I want to do. I went this long without it, I can make do until then. At least getting the enclosure wrapped around the Taig will help keep my little shop clean.
I spend too much time friggin sweeping up >:D
Friggin chips get everywhere as you all know.... >:(
Some pics for you........

Looks good Dave, is that framing clip together stuff?
Hood
-
Yes, it's the 80/20 quickframe but I always go overkill on things and will probably secure it with fasteners on each corner. Especially the door frame. :P
Dave
-
Do you get a beer can holder that clips to that framing? ;D

Sort of, it'll be a linear stepper unit that will travel out from behind it where there will be a small refrigerated unit to keep it cold while I'm not drinking it.
Here's a screenshot :D

little gas struts
"Gas springs" are the proper term. McMaster-Carr carries them and light duty ones are very cheap. Looks great so far, keep us posted on the progress!

For sometime now, I have been observing the commitment to excellence and detail exhibited on here. You guys are amazing. So, I thought I would show you how the rest of us (at least some of us) do things. Trying to attach some pics of my Taig mill enclosure. Not sure what will happen. But here are the details.
The pan is an old photo developing tray that had been stored in the garage for - oh, about 10 years. Drilled a 1/2 inch hole in the bottom to handle coolant return to a 5 gallon bucket containing a small pond pump. The Taig was just a little too deep for the tray so I raised it above the lip on 2" nylon blocks. Drilled through the blocks and workbench to make everything solid. Product called Plumbers Goop works as a great sealent, no leaks. Length wise, the tray works great. the Table (including steppers) can move to either extreme without hitting either side.
The enclosure is 1/8" Plexiglas that has been screwed to the sides of the pan (Plumbers Goop again, no leaks). Upper corners are held together with L-brackets. Did not have room for either horizontally sliding or hinged doors so I extended the to about 3 feet with 1/4" aluminum channel. I can raise the front cover straight up (its held up by small hooked springs, not fancy). Actually, it works very well. I can reach straight in and get to any part of the Taig or whatever part I am working on.
Not art, but very functional - and the price was right.
Bob @ BobsShop - Not associated with Plumbers Goop, Taig, or whatever company built the tray.
-
You're absolutely correct, Sam, I had gas struts on the brains as a friend was just talking about those today. :-[
Thanks for the McMaster tip. I love that place, it's like a crackhouse, er.....um, I mean candy store..... :D
Dave
-
Excellent, Bob, thanks for sharing.
My "plan" when I'm ready is to have another "layer" of 80/20 framing added to the bottom to act as the waterproof tray. That way I can work on it and still use the machine until it's ready.
Dave

Ha ha like the Beer Me button ;D
Hood
-
That's why I put it there 8)
By the way, just a note, the lower front 2 30 degree connectors had to be made as they don't make those.

Bob
very functional, doesnt matter if its not the most beautiful in the world however I would say its not too bad :)

Dave
Your just trying to justify all the time you spend playing with that mill ;D
Hood

Actually I made them on the bridgeport at work. I wanted them quickly ;)

Looks good Dave....very tidy.

thanks, RC :)

Dave,
What are you going to do with all your extra time because you don't need to clean up?
Next you will have coolant to give it a bath.
He all kidding aside, look around the flea markets and yard sales see if you can find one of those circular
robotic vacuum cleaners. My friend bought and fixed one up and his basement floor is always clean.
It learns it's way around the shop, programs the cleaning, and then parks itself in the charger.
hHe paid $20.00 and i am still looking for one. The dog would love it to!

Rich, I would end up stepping on that damn thing and breaking my neck, I'm sure of it - :D
Dave

Do you get a beer can holder that clips to that framing? ;D
Hood
You don't need a beer can holder, you can just make one of these and keep it in a handy plance.

That'd be great if I could figure out a way to keep it from spilling my mugs..... :D

Hi Dave,
Could have saved you a lot of work if you lived in the UK. I've just taken my mini mill out of its enclosure which is now awaiting the scrap man.
Regards, Tweakie.
-
That would be considered as Rich always says, that's "good junk" ! :D
Dave
-
"GOOD JUNK"
Ahh! Like music to a man with delusions of the future!
And if you save everything that's what your garage or shop can become "delusions". :)

Ok, an update on the enclosure. I have it just about finished but there are quite a few things I still want/need to do yet.
- upper lighting
-cutting doors into the clear side walls for those longer jobs that I may have someday
- possible upper venting if need be
- Sealing for coolant
- Tool/wrench holders and such
I added an E-Stop to the left rear which is real close to my lathe. It'll be within arms reach just in case I hear anything "crunchy" going on in there lol!
I'm loving the full open front as I need to be able to "get around" in there for various things.
I also moved the spindle to the right rear which is a nice feature and moved the air pump for the nozzle into the cabinet below.
The gas lifts for the door are perfect and I have Mcmaster to thank for that as their directions for figuring what you need are excellent.
Here are a few pics for you:

Very nicely done Dave , how do you like the shuttle pro . I have a Jogdial I just ordered , kind of the same
-
Thanks, Peter, the shuttle is fantastic, just wish it had even more buttons and macros available :D
Not familiar with Jogdial, got a link?
Thanks,
Dave
-
David here is the jog dial below
http://www.stcloudrobotics.com/
But in the process of looking for it I ran into this cool unit that I think I will buy , way more functional
http://www.lowcostcncretrofits.com/jogremote.html
-
Peter, don't bother going with the St Cloud jogwheel as that is really just a "labelled" Shuttle express which you can get cheaper on ebay or a regular retail place that carries them. The Shuttle Pro 2 is the same thing but has way more buttons and functionality and is cheap as well.

I wish I would have seen that lowcostcnc unit a few days ago , unfortunaitly I already ordered a Jog dial on thursday but I am going to flip it on ebay for whatever I can get , what do you think of the lowcostcnc unit.............. ???
-
Which one? ;)
Dave
-
This one for $359.00 clams
-
It looks really nice but I have no experience with it.
It also looks very well built (and better be for that price) and some nice features like the joystick and the large e-stop.
If you do decide to get it, please give us a review!
Dave
-
Dave I am for sure buying it within the next few days and for sure will give a review
-
Excellent, look forward to hearing about it!
Dave
-
Just ordered it , now to slide it under the wifes nose...............LOL .Final cost $525.00 Canadain
-
ouch..... :D
