Title: Configuring servo spindle
Post by: saulij on June 03, 2006, 04:32:21 PM
I have UHU-servodrive and PMDC motor with encoder for spindle.

How can I configure Mach to know how many pulses is needed for 1 rev?

You can do this under ports and pins. I think it is encoder 3 that you have to set.

I'm confused:

Encoder is connected to UHU, should I connect it to Mach also?  I’m using step/dir control and I think that Mach does not need encoder information.

My problem is that if I type gcode S50M3, spindle rotates about 500 rpm.

I have noticed that Mach has input for spindle index. Should I use it some way?
Why there is not  “Steps per unit”-box for spindle as is in Motor Tuning dialog?
Is it even possible to use servo as spindle?

Thanks

I see :) Try changing your steps per unit under motor tuning. I think you need to take the number that is there and divide it by 10.

Of course. I have to be blind.  :)

Thanks

Hi Sauli
How did you make out with your spindle drive configuration, did you get it to
work o.k.? I am doing the same thing with a 2.5 hp treadmill motor and a 200 volt
uhu drive.I can get it to run very close to the programmed rpm but ,it doesent like
to reverse very good, which it will need in order to rigid tap.

Thanks Rick

Hello Rick,

I have tested the spindle only on the table and it works fine. Rotation is smooth in both directions.
I think some treadmill motors are not suitable to use in reverse direction.

My motor is 2,5 hp also. It has angled brushes so it is not designed to use in reverse direction. I think it don’t damage it if it rotates backwards only short periods as in threading.

See pictures in [url] http://www.diy600.net/[url]. I'm happy so far.

Very impressive Saulij

I forgot to ask you if you are running your spindle direct or gearing it down, and if so
what kind of ratio and rpms are expected?

I'm using it 1:1 ratio.  My PSU will be about 130 V 30 A. I have 100 ppr encoder attached to motor. I expect to get 2800 r/min using Mach3 at 25 kHz.
